The Gatemen are back on the road Sunday night to face the Orleans Firebirds at Eldredge Park. Wareham moved down to fourth place in the West after their loss to the Falmouth Commodores. After Saturday night’s close loss to the Bourne Braves, the Firebirds sit in third place in the East Division.

Wareham is on a three game losing streak that they are hoping to snap on Sunday night. Manager Ryan Smyth said his team is capable of putting themselves in a position to win.

“We’re gonna get off of this little skid here soon and hopefully it starts tomorrow and then we start another good run,” Smyth said. “We’ve done it before, we know we’re capable of doing it. It’s tough losing games the way we have. Once we play a clean game of baseball then we’ll be right back in the win column.”

In the first meeting between the two teams, the Gatemen came out on top 5-2 in a game shortened due to weather.

Although rain is back in the forecast for the game, Wareham is ready to go. Smyth said his team needs to get back to playing with a sense of urgency.

“We need to get out here and start working and get back after it and make these guys understand that they can field baseballs,” Smyth said. “We did it for a good stretch on the positive side where we played some really clean baseball. Pitchers were efficient in the zone. We went on a good stretch where we weren’t walking a whole lot of people and playing at a fast pace so when we do that from a defensive side then our offense is gonna be really really good.”

Aidan Major (West Virginia) will toe the rubber for the Gatemen Sunday night. The righty threw 4.2 innings in his Gatemen debut against the Cotuit Kettleers on June 24. Major gave up two runs on two hits, but struck out six batters. The Mountaineer currently holds a 3.85 ERA going into the Orleans matchup.
