Community Engagement

For many years, the Wareham Gatemen Organization has made it a priority to be active in the community and support various community organizations and projects. While most support is done anonymously, the Gatemen do promote some of our activities:

MOVIE NIGHT AT SPILLANE FIELD
The Gatemen host a movie night at Spillane Field Using the new video scoreboard. In 2021, the movie was “The Sandlot,” a PG-rated movie about a neighborhood baseball team.
Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. Attendees can watch from the stands or bring beach chairs and blankets to lounge in the outfield.

GATEMEN READING PROGRAM
For several years, the Gatemen have run a reading program in conjunction with local schools and libraries.  At least once a week, Gatemen players visit different summer programs to spend time with the children.  The players help with reading and other daily tasks of the programs as well as sharing their experiences growing up.  This program benefits the children as much as the Gatemen players.

PARTNERSHIP WITH THE WAREHAM BOYS & GIRLS CLUB
Once a week, Gatemen players go to the Wareham Boys & Girls Club to lend a hand with the club’s summer program.  The players help the staff with whatever needs to be done but it usually ends up being a few hours of playing and talking with the kids in the program.

PARTNERSHIP WITH THE WAREHAM PUBLIC LIBRARIES
For many years, the Gatemen have been going to the libraries and helping the staff with general maintenance, grounds keeping, shelving books and (if possible) technological tasks.

PARTNERSHIP WITH KEYSTONE PLACE AT BUZZARDS BAY
Beginning in 2017, the Gatemen players volunteered one day per week to spend time visiting with the residents of Keystone Place, an independent living, assisted living and memory care complex in Buzzards Bay.

CHRISTMAS IN JULY TOY DRIVE
The Gatemen hold a toy drive at one of our July home games. All toys collected are donated to local organizations servicing those children in need.
