Two five run innings demise for Gatemen in Bourne
The Gatemen offense picked up right where it left off from last night. Braiden Ward (Washington) advanced to 1ston an error and did what he did best stealing 2ndbase. Jacob Teter (Florida Southern) sent Ward home on a double into deep left.
The Wareham lead didn’t las long. In the 3rdinning Zavier Warren (Central Michigan) sent home the tying run on a double. Brendan Rivoli (Virginia) hit a blooper single sending home Warren giving Bourne a 2-1 lead.
Mike Antico (St. Johns) smacked a double into left in the 5thinning. It looked as though Ward sent him home on a hard hit single but Antico was tagged out at home. Jerry Weinstein made an argument for blocking the plate but the call stood.
Wareham still had a chance in the 5thinning, only trailing 2-1, but this where things fell apart for the Gatemen and Cole Stetzar (St. Josephs). 5 runs were scored on 4 hits. Rivoli and Jared Poland (Louisville) hit RBI singles, and Stetzar walked in a run on a hit by pitch.
Christopher Mauloni (Jacksonville) came in with the bases loaded and one out. Mauloni walked in a run on the first batter he faced and allowed one more run on a sacrifice fly. Mauloni struggled to settle in to the game allowing two more runs in the 6thinning.
Warren hit an RBI triple, and Rivoli sent him home on a sacrifice fly. Warren went 5-6 with 3 RBI, and Rivoli was 2-3 with 4 RBI. Wareham showed some signs of life in the 7thinning. Chad Stevens (Portland) and Jacob Teter (Florida Southern) hit RBI singles. Wareham’s 4thrun was scored on a sacrifice fly.
Bourne answered back with its second 5 run inning of the game. This time around Quinn Cleary (Yale) was the victim on the mound. Two singles, a double, and two walks resulted in the runs being scored. Cleary couldn’t complete the inning posting a final line of 0.2 IP, 2 H, 5 ER, 2 BB/
One of the most surprising story lines of the game was Matthew Rudick (San Diego State) making an appearance on the mound in the 8thinning. Rudick has some experience playing pitcher in high school and in the fall at San Diego State.
“I knew that sometime this season I was going to pitch because I was told by the coaches and threw a few bullpen sessions” Rudick said. “Today in the outfield Ward and I were playing catch and I didn’t think anything of it but he actually wanted me to warm up.”
Ironically enough, the one batter he faced was Warren and he was the only Wareham pitcher to get him out.
“It felt good to be on the mound I just wanted to get in and get out honestly so my arm wasn’t sore for tomorrow” Rudick said. “I use a fastball curveball and changeup. My changeup is my best pitch but I didn’t get to show it today.”
Teter collected his third RBI of the game on and RBI single in the 9thinning. A second run in the inning was scored on a sacrifice fly, but it was too little too late, as the Gatemen lost 14-6. The Gatemen fell to 22-18-12 on the season, while the Braves improved to 18-23-1. Both teams play each other again tonight at 6:45 p.m. in Wareham.
