The Bourne Braves had no answer for Cole Larsen (Kansas) through the first 3 innings. After a lead-off single in the first inning Larsen sent down the next 8 batters he faced in order. Larsen had some help from his defense as 3 double plays were completed through the first 4 innings.
Wareham had a quiet first two innings but the offense came alive in the 3rdinning. In his first at-bat with the Gatemen Trey Lipscomb (Tennessee) hit a single up the middle. Mike Antico (St.Johns) got on base with a walk. Both Lipcomb and Antico stole, and Braiden Ward (Washington) loaded the bases on a walk.
Jacob Teter (Florida Southern) scored Wareham’s first run on an RBI groundout but no more damage was done in the 3rdinning.
Lipscomb had as good a debut you could ask for hitting a 2-run home run in his second at-bat in the 4thinning. Antico said I’ll have what he’s having hit a solo home run of his own right after Lipscomb. Antico was 2-4 last game with 2 doubles and is heating up at the perfect time.
“I felt pretty loose out there and everything went my way tonight” Lipscomb said. “I am not going to change anything from what I have been doing all summer. I found out a week ago I was coming to the Cape and my college teammate Derkay has already introduced me to the coaches and some of the guys so that was really helpful.”
Larsen dominated posting a final line of 6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO. New addition Joe rock (Ohio) relieved Larsen. Rock was electric going 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 SO.
“I pounded the zone and it was really nice to be out there as a starter again. My changeup was my best pitch of the night and I wish I located my fastball a little better” Larsen said. “It’s always easier to pitch with the lead and it also helps playing with such a great defense.”
Making his farewell appearance Ben Leeper (Oklahoma) came in to close out the game in the 9th inning. Leeper was officially deactivated today and will be missed in the postseason. This season Leeper served as the closer, and was very effective (3.60 ERA with 12 SO in 10 IP).
The Gatemen improved to 23-18-2 on the season as Bourne fell to 18-24. Wareham has one more game remaining in the regular season tonight against the Falmouth Commodores at home at 6:45 p.m. The Gatemen begin the postseason Friday night hosting the Cotuit Kettleers at 6:45 p.m.
