Gatemen Fall to Defending Champions 3-2

The Brewster Whitecaps took the field Wednesday night in Wareham to take on the Gatemen. Wareham entered the game at 6-8-1, commanding the fourth spot in the West division while Brewster came in at 8-7 holding second place in the East. The defending champion Whitecaps walked away with win number nine of their season.

The 1st inning saw action from both sides with the teams each scoring a run. The Whitecaps Michael Sirota (Northeastern) started things off with a walk and advanced to third on a Davis Diaz (Vanderbilt) single. Another single by David Mendham (Oklahoma St.) brought in Sirota for an RBI and a 1-0 lead. Wareham’s Hogan Windish (UNC Greensboro) blasted a solo home run into the bleachers to tie things up 1-1.

Brewster tacked on another run in the top of the 5th taking a 2-1 lead. Parks Harber (Georgia) started things off with a single and was moved over to third on a Javier Vaz (Vanderbilt) single. Sirota then grounded into an RBI fielder’s choice giving the Whitecaps a lead.

The Whitecaps starter Carson Liggett (Louisville) shined in his 4.2 innings pitched. He struck out four batters while his only blemish being the Windish home run

Carson Demartini (Virginia Tech) mashed a leadoff homer in the top of the 7th. This bomb over the right field wall gave the Whitecaps a 3-1 lead.

Bryan Padilla (UConn) came in to pinch hit in the bottom of the 8th and came through. He delivered a solo blast over the left field wall to get the Gatemen within one run, trailing the Whitecaps just 3-2.

Brewster reliever Brennen Oxford (Wake Forest) picked up the win while delivering two strikeouts in his 1.1 innings of work. Patrick Copen (Marshall) came in and shut down the Gateman for his second save of the season.

The Gatemen fell 3-2 to the Whitecaps and will look to get back in the win column on Thursday. Wareham will travel to Lowell Park to take on the first place Cotuit Kettleers.
