The Wareham Gatemen dropped the last game of the season in Orleans against the Firebirds with a final score of 6-4.

Firebird Jacob Stinson (Nevada Reno) hit an RBI-double to drive in the first run of the night, bringing Orleans a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning.

The Gatemen had an explosive four-run 3rd inning. Cameron Chick (Missouri Columbia) roped a leadoff double to begin the inning. Max Anderson (Nebraska) and Ryan Campos (Arizona St) had productive at bats, each coming up with singles, bringing Chick home. Owen Diodati (Oregon) hit an RBI-single to drive in Anderson. Carter Graham (Stanford) came through with a sacrifice fly to bring home Campos, advancing Diodati to third. Brian Morrell also had an RBI-single of his own that scored Diodati.

Gatemen starter Niko Mazza (Southern Mississippi) went four innings, giving up just one run on five hits.

The 4th inning went 1-2-3 with each pitcher retiring the side quickly.

The Gatemen got out of a jam in the 5th, but the 7th inning was not so forgiving. Drew Metzdorf (UMass Boston) started off the inning with an RBI-single to bring home Orleans’ second run of the night. Nik McClaughry (Arizona) had an RBI-single of his own to bring the Firebirds within one run of tying the ballgame. Firebirds leadoff hitter Luke Keaschal (San Francisco) then hit a three-run homer, bringing the score 6-4 over Wareham.

That’d be the final score and the end of the Gatemen season. The Gatemen finish 13-24-7 for the 2022 season, missing the CCBL playoffs for the second year in a row after the canceled 2020 season.
