The Gatemen look to keep their feet on the gas after yesterday’s commanding 12-1 win over the Harwich Mariners. The Gatemen are back at Spillane Field for night two of back-to-back home games, and are set to face the Orleans Firebirds.

Orleans ended the 2022 season 18-22-4 and claimed third place in the East Division. Last season, Wareham went 1-2-1 against the Firebirds and looks to make a comeback with their new team in 2023.

Manager Ryan Smyth looks to put another game in the win column Wednesday night. After managing his first home game against Hyannis on Sunday night, Smyth was happy with what he saw from the Gatemen fans.

“It was awesome,” he said. “Crowd was fantastic, bleachers were almost all full. The environment was great so I wish we would have came out with a win, but I’m sure we’re gonna get plenty more of them here.”

Luckily, the team did come out with a home win Tuesday night, giving Gatemen fans a taste of what the season could be.

Jonathan Bautista (Pitt) is set to start the game on the mound against the Firebirds. Bautista finished the college spring season with 22 appearances for the Panthers, logging 31 strikeouts in 37 innings. Bautista is in his second stint with the Cape League. Last year he appeared in two games out of the Hyannis Harbor Hawks’ bullpen and claimed a 2.25 ERA in his four innings of work.

Fans can watch Bautista and the Gatemen live on the Gatemen Baseball Network YouTube page with pregame coverage starting at 5:45 before the 6 p.m. first pitch.
