Wareham is set to face Cotuit Sunday night at Spillane Field for their final weekend game of the season. The Gatemen’s chase to make the playoffs was put to an end with a 9-8 walk-off loss to the Falmouth Commodores Saturday night. The Bourne Braves officially punched their postseason ticket with the loss and also won their own game to make it in as the final team in the West.

The offense worked through the Falmouth pitching staff as they recorded 15 hits for eight runs. Grant Sherrod (USC Upstate), Jimmy Brennan (Post) and Michael Brooks (Kansas) all had three-hit games and Grant Hussey (West Virginia) hit his second home run in as many games. Packy Bradley-Cooney and Jackson Reid (Western Carolina transfer) provided a spark from the bullpen as they pitched a collective seven innings of two-run ball and combined for eight strikeouts.

As the Gatemen look to finish their 2023 campaign strong, the first game on that list is against the Kettleers, who hold a small lead at the top of the West. Cotuit is 5-4-1 in their last 10 games after dominating the league throughout the season.

In their last two matchups, the Ketts put up a total of 22 runs compared to Wareham’s four. Aidan Major (West Virginia) will face Cotuit for the second time this season. In the June 24 outing, the Gatemen beat the Kettleers 7-2 after a strong 4.2 innings from Major. He allowed just two runs on two hits while striking out six batters. The West Virginia product will look to recreate the magic and keep Cotuit’s bats cold. In his last game against the Bourne Braves on July 24, the righty pitched an uncharacteristically low 2.1 innings and allowed three earned runs on four hits. Tonight’s outing will mark Major’s team high sixth and final start on the mound.

Fans can head to the Gatemen Baseball Network on YouTube for tonight’s broadcast of all the action with pregame coverage beginning at 5:40 before the 6 o’clock first pitch at Spillane Field.
