Y-D Red Sox offense explodes in a 10-3 win over the Wareham Gatemen at BC High School

BOSTON- The Wareham Gatemen outfielders were looking over their shoulders often as the Red Sox offense pulled ahead early and didn’t look back defeating the Wareham 10-3 in a special Cape League matchup at BC High School.
Andrew Eyster (South Carolina) continued his hot start to the season hitting a double into left field in the first inning. Coming into the ball game Eyster had a home run two doubles, and a triple, only getting out once. Jack Wold (Nevada) hit the first home run of the Cape League season but couldn’t replicate that as Conor Larkin (Penn State) worked himself out of the jam retiring Wold and Riley Triotta (Dayton) stranding the runner on third.
Darren Baker (Cal Berkeley) answered Eyster’s double with one of his own in the bottom half of the inning. Baker is the son of long time MLB player and coach Dusty Baker, who was in attendance to watch his son. Just as Baker imitated Eyster, Carlos Lomeli (St. Marys) ended the first inning with strikeout identical to what Larkin did in the top half of the inning.
Austin Wells (Arizona) opened up the second inning with a double. Jeff Costello (Northeastern) playing just down the road from where he plays collegiate baseball sent Wells home on an RBI double giving Y-D a 1-0 lead. Jack Suddleston hit a pop up into shallow right, but it was enough sending Suddleston home extending the lead to 2-0. Things quickly went from bad to worse for Larkin as Wyatt Young (Pepperdine) hit an RBI triple making it a 3-0 game.
Trey Dillard (Missouri) took over for Larkin in the third inning. And Dillard did a good job at keeping the pitch count low after coming in rather early sending down the Red Sox in order including 2 convincing strikeouts.
The Red Sox capitalized on a wild throw from Drew Sims (Utah Valley) in the third inning trying to throw out the runner attempting to steal third base allowing Suddleston to easily stroll home making it a 4-0 game. Sims made amends for his error, hitting a moonshot 2-run home run into deep left off the foul pole in the fourth inning making the score 4-2.
“I knew it was gone right away but I wasn’t sure if it was fair or foul” Sims said. “On that error I tried rushing my throw and I thought I had the ball in my glove but my arm dragged a little bit and you know the rest.”
Caleb Wurster (Penn State) relieved Dillard in the 5thinning. Benjamin Sems (Kansas) led off the fifth inning with a double off the left field wall. Matthew Rudick’s (San Diego State) first hit of the summer was a big one hitting a triple off the right field wall sending home Sems making it a 1 run game. What was one of the major turning points of the game Rudick was thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice hit by Baker.
Suddleston reached base for his third time of the ball game with a triple that rocketed into the left field gap. That triple would spell the end of Wurster’s night with Joey Baran (East Stroudsburg) taking the mound in a tricky situation. The situation proved to be too tricky as Wyatt Young hit an RBI single extending the Red Sox lead to 5-3.
Cole Stetzar (St. Joes) came in to relive Carlos Lomeli in the sixth inning. Jack Wold made a very impressive play to complete the double-play ending the sixth inning. Austin Wells (Arizona) hit a sac-fly on the warning track to send Wold home making it 6-3 Red Sox. Daylan Nanny added some salt to the wound crushing a triple to center field sending home another run giving Y-D a 7-3 lead.
Will Picketts (Cal St. Fullerton) Led off the 8thinning with a triple because of Rudick miss-reading the fly ball in the night sky. Lane Flamm (Xavier) who came in for the 8thinning threw a wild pitch sending Picketts home making the score 8-3 Y-D.
Flamm struggled in the ninth inning loading the bases with only 1 out. Drew Swift (ASU) hit a blooper single into right sending in 2 more runs making the score 10-3. That’s how the game would end as the Gatemen failed to muster any offense in the bottom of the ninth.
“I think we need to be better with leaving pitches up in easy to hit places for batters” Sims said. “I believe once we start putting more pitches inside we will get better results.”
Several players stood out for the Red Sox. Young was 2-4 with 2 RBI, Wells was 2-4 with 1 RBI, and Costello was 2-4 with 1 RBI. Meanwhile on the Gatemen several pitchers struggled including Larkin who allowed 3 runs in 2 innings pitched and Baran who allowed 2 runs in 2 innings.
“There is a lot of stuff we need to improve on” Coach Jerry Weinstein said. “Whether you are playing good or whether you are playing badly there is always something to improve on. It was not a good night for us and Y-D played very well.”
The Red Sox improve to 2-1 on the season while the Wareham Gatemen fall to 1-1. No time is set yet, But Wareham is supposed to make up its game with the Falmouth Commodores tomorrow unless rain once again postpones the game.
