Wareham Bests Hyannis 4-0

By Barrett Hodgson

The Hyannis Harbor Hawks visited Spillane Field to take on the Wareham Gatemen on a misty Friday night. The Gatemen came out victorious behind some strong pitching to improve to 4-4-2.

The Gatemen broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the 3rd taking a 1-0 lead. Tommy Troy (Stanford) stepped up with one out and laced a line drive triple down the right field line. The next batter Tres Gonzalez (Georgia Tech) did his job and scored Troy from 3rd on an RBI groundout to 1st.

Wareham finally tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the 7th after scoreless 4th, 5th, and 6th innings. Jack Brannigan (Notre Dame) led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. The next two Gatemen batters drew walks to load the bases with no outs. Hyannis then got two quick outs with Kade Kern (Ohio State) stepping in. Kern delivered a two RBI single in between 3rd and shortstop to grow the Gatemen lead to 3-0.

Justin Williams (Penn State) extended the lead in the bottom of the 8th. Williams blasted a solo home run into the left field bullpen to put the game away for the Gatemen, giving them a 4-0 lead.

The Gatemen pitching was lights out tonight as they tossed a combined shutout. Erubiel Candelario (Marist) started the game for Wareham, throwing three innings of no run baseball. Alexander Pham (San Francisco) came in for 2.2 innings and gave up one hit while striking out four. Spencer Miles (Missouri) pitched two innings and struck out five before Ethan Chenault (North Carolina Wilmington) closed it out.

The Gatemen are back in action Saturday, July 3rd at Doran Park to take on the undefeated Bourne Braves.
