CHATHAM- Ian Bedell and Trent Palmer combine for 9 scoreless innings and a balanced offensive effort led to a 7-0 win over the Chatham Anglers
Sloppy defense plagued the Chatham Anglers in the first inning. Collin Hill (Georgia Tech) miss played an easy pop up by Jacob Teter (Florida Southern) and a dropped ball by Alex Toral (Miami) on an Adiran Del Castillo (Miami) groundout resulted in a run. Dallas Beaver made it 2-0 on an RBI single but was tagged out to end the inning trying to reach second base.
Ian Bedell (Missouri) struck out the side to start the game. Wareham got into striking distance in the 2ndinning as well. The Gatemen put runners on 2ndand 3rdwith 1 out. Braiden Ward (Washington) sent both runners home for his 12thand 13thRBI of the season giving the Gatemen a 4-0 lead.
Bedell struck out the side in the 3rdinning as well. Ward continued to be a thorn in the side of Chatham as he launched a home run over the right field fence for his 3rdof the season. Benjamin Sems (Kansas) made it 6-0 in the 6thinning with a sacrifice groundout.
Trent Palmer (Jacksonville) took over for Bedell in the 7thinning. Bedell’s final line was 6 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 SO. This without a doubt may have been the best Gatemen pitching performance we have seen all season. Palmer and Bedell have been quite the 1-2 punch all season as Palmer has usually relieved Bedell.
“I felt really in control and everything was working and I was able to get every pitch where I needed to” Bedell said. “Against left-handed batters my curveball worked well. There was a scouting report that I didn’t throw curve balls to left handed batters so I used that and my changeup against them.”
Palmer got into some trouble in the 8thinning. Palmer loaded up the bases with only 1 out. Luckily Palmer worked his way out of the jam striking out 2 batters and that was a common theme for the Chatham offense.
Cole Ayers (Kentucky) had a decent outing but received the loss. Ayers’ final line was 5 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO. Bedell got the win and Palmer got a 3 inning save. Ward went 3-4 with 3 RBI, Dallas Beaver (South Carolina) was 2-5 with 1 RBI, and Sems was 2-5 with 1 RBI.
“At times when the defense was making plays I felt like I was in a good rhythm and it helped me ease into the game knowing I had them to back me up” Bedell said. “It’s a lot of fun when everyone is hitting and it always helps out a pitcher when the offense is playing well.”
The Gatemen improved to 14-11-1 on the season while the Chatham Anglers fell to 15-10-1. Both teams still remain in 1stplace in their respective divisions. The Anglers are back in action tonihght at 7 p.m. hosting the Falmouth Commodores. The Wareham Gatemen host the Braves at 6:45 p.m.
