Roller Coaster Game 1 Ends With Fireworks as Trey Lipscomb Walks it off

In one of the wildest baseball games you will ever watch the Gatemen scored six runs in the first inning and the Kettleers scored six runs in the fourth inning. The Gatemen came out victorious in an 8-7 ball game.
This was all thanks to Trey Lipcscomb (Tennessee). He has been on a tear since joining the Gatemen. He is 4-11 with 5 RBI and was the hero of game 1 hitting a walk off single in the 10thinning.
“I am pretty excited right now, you know hitting a walk off is one of the biggest accomplishments you can have in baseball” Lipscomb said. “They have just as many good players as we do and they fought back putting up the 6 run inning but we had more compete in us tonight and got the result.”
It all started on a Dallas Beaver (South Carolina) sacrifice fly. Back to back singles by Matt McLain (UCLA) and Trey Lipcsomb (Tennessee) extended the lead to 4-0. Benjamin Sems (Kansa) put the cherry on top roping a two RBI double into left field making it 6-0.
The Sems double ended Jackson Wolf’s (West Virginia) night. Wolf was never able find his stuff posting a final line of 0.2 IP, 4 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO. Christopher Holcomb (Tulane) took over on the mound.
Cotuit answered back with a six run inning in the fourth inning. The most surprising part being, it was against Ian Bedell (Missouri). Bedell came into the game only allowing 3 runs all season. Bedell allowed six alone in the fourth inning.
Joey Loperfido (Duke) set the tone hitting a home run to lead off the inning. What followed was a hit by pitch, two singles, and two doubles. Missouri teammate Trey Dillard relieved Bedell after the second double. A single and hit by pitch scored two more runs with Dillard on the mound.
Bedell had an uncharacteristic line of 3.1 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 3 SO. After the game Bedell received an award for best pitcher of the 2019 CCBL season. This start was nothing more than an anomaly as Bedell was fantastic all season.
Christopher Holcomb (Tulane) was absolutely electric on the mound. Holcomb retired 10 batters in a row striking out three Gatemen. Holcomb was lights out using a nasty slider and curveball, but two straight singles in the fifth inning ended his night. Holcomb posted a final line of 4.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3 SO.
Two straight walks in the seventh inning presented a golden opportunity for the Gatemen to knot things up. Braiden Ward (Washington) led off with a walk and stole second base, and Derkay was walked as well. Adrian Del Castillo (Miami) delivered, tying the ball game on a double into left.
Tanner Bibee (Cal State Fullerton) relived Dillard in the 8thinning. Dillard had a great outing going 3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO. The ninth inning was dicey for the Gatemen. Dillard walked the leadoff batter and he advanced to second on a bunt. With one out in the ninth Jason Ruffcorn (Oklahoma) relieved Bibee and worked himself out of the jam.
Kyle Nicolas (Ball State) couldn’t be touched. In 2.1 innings of action he didn’t allow a hit striking out the side in the 9thinning. That all changed in the 10th inning as nine innings weren’t enough to end things.
Ruffcorn was in a groove sending down the Kettleers in order in the 10thinning.
Del Castillo led off the 10thinning with a blooper single into left. Mike Antico (St. Johns) came in to pinch run for Del Castillo. Beaver advanced the winning run into scoring position on a bunt and McLain was walked.
Rudick sent home Antico on a single into right but he was tagged out at home keeping the game alive. Lipscomb ended the ball game on an infield single.
“I expect them to bounce back and bring their best baseball against us tomorrow but we will be right there competing with them” Lipscomb said. “As long as we play good defense and play our game I expect the same type of result tomorrow.”
The Gatemen are still undefeated in the postseason dating back to the beginning of the playoffs last season. Wareham travels to Cotuit tomorrow for game 2 with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
