Niko Kavadas stole the show in Wareham hitting 3 home runs

Wareham opened up the scoring in the 2ndinning. Ben Sems (Kansas) showed why he was selected to the CCBL All-Star team sending home a run on an RBI single making it 1-0. Niko Kavadas (Notre Dame) like Sems proved his CCBL All-Star selection launching a 2-run home run into deep left giving the Mariners a 2-1 lead.
Cole Stetzar (St. Josephs) faced the minimum coming into the 4thinning but had a nightmare 4thinning. After the home run Patrick Winkel (San Diego State) made it 3-1 on an RBI single. Stetzar got out of the inning with runners on the corners striking out Winkel’s college teammate Cory Acton (San Diego State).
Kavadas continued his tear in the 5thinning hitting his 2nd2-run home run of the night making it a 5-1 ball game. Will Fleming (Wake Forest) relieved Stetzar in the 6thinning. Stetzar’s final line was 5.0 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO.
Dallas Beaver (South Carolina) extended his hitting streak to 6 games with a double in the 7thinning. Beaver eventually worked his way to third base but was stranded. Kavadas completed the hat trick in the 8thinning getting all of one for his 3rdhome run making it 6-1.
“I have just been getting good pitches to hit. I haven’t been doing much differently at the plate I am just seeing the ball a little bit better right now” Beaver said. “It’s awesome to be named an All-Star. This league is competitive so to be named a starter for the team really means a lot to me.”
The Gatemen had a chance in the 8thinning to mount a comeback. Beaver hit a single and Matt McLain got on base after an error from Acton. Mike Antico (St. Johns) advances both runners on a groundout but no damage was done as Sems and Drew Sims (Utah Valley) hit back-to-back fly-outs to end the inning.
The league leading Harwich Mariner pitching staff was shown on full display last night. The Mariners were led by 3 East Division CCBL All-Stars last night. The first player was Jacob Palisch (Stanford) who was dominant on the mound finishing with a final line of 5.0 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 3 SO.
Palisch was followed up by Will Heflin (Tennessee). Heflin overpowered his way through the Gatemen lineup posting a final line of 2.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 S0. Lastly Joe Boyle (Notre Dame) didn’t have a save opportunity but came in for the 9thinning and struck out the side.
Fleming deserves credit for his performance as well. Fleming posted a final line of 4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 5 SO. Fleming came into the game allowing a run in all 5 of his prior appearances and although he did allow a run last night he posted a formidable final line of 4.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 0 BB, 5 SO.
The Wareham offense was shut down as only Beaver and Tora Otsuka (San Diego) had multi-hit nights. Beaver finished 2-5 and Otsuka finished 2-4. Kavadas carried the workload of the Harwich offense going 3-4 with 5 RBI.
“It was unbelievable I have only seen a few 3-home run games so you know he was on tonight and I’m excited to watch him in the home run derby” Beaver said. “Harwich has some good arms we have played them in the past. I thought we put some really good at-bats together and we had plenty of opportunities just couldn’t come through.”
Wareham fall to 16-12-1 on the season but still hold a 1 point advantage for the lead of the West Division. Harwich improved to 13-5 on the season but the Mariners still find themselves sitting in last place of the East Division. The Gatemen are back in action tonight in Brewster playing the White Caps at 5:00 p.m. Harwich is hosting the Bourne Braves tonight at 5:30 p.m.
