New Wareham players shine in double header win/tie over Hyannis

Game 1
Braiden Ward (Washington) led off the game with a walk and then stole his league leading 25thbase. Ward was stranded at 3rdbase after 2 strikeouts and a groundout. Dallas Beaver (South Carolina) launched a home run into right field in the 2ndinning. Zack Mathis (LSU) went yard himself making the score 2-0.
“I just trusted the process out there. I slowed the game down and stuck to what I have been doing” Mathis said. “At the end of the day this is still baseball not matter what new league I’m in, so it hasn’t been too much of an adjustment.
Hyannis got on the board in the 3rdinning. Jackson Olson (Hartford) led off the inning with a double and advanced to 3rdon an error. Ian Fair (Northeastern) sent home the run on a sacrifice fly.
Matt Rudick (San Diego State) reached 1stbase getting hit by a pitch in the 4thinning. Mike Antico (St. Johns) sent him all the way home from first on a double deep into right field. The Gatemen offense kept rolling in the 5thinning.
Matt McLain (UCLA) was hit by a pitch and Teter was took a walk. Beaver sent home McLain on a single into right field. Sems made it 5-1 on a sacrifice bunt and Rudick made it 6-1 on a double perfectly placed in right field. Rubbing salt in the wound, Mathis hit a double off the wall sending home Wareham’s 7thrun.
Trent Palmer (Jacksonville) relieved Fleming in the 5thinning. Fleming had possibly his best outing of the season posting a final line of 4.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 SO. Palmer was fantastic on the mound. He posted a final line of 3.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO.
Mathis and Beaver had stand out performances in game 1. They were both 2-4 with 2 RBI. Fleming was awarded the win, and Palmer pitched a 3 inning save.
“These past two games we have been more aggressive at the plate and the results have shown” Mathis said. “If we play just like we did in Game 1 I don’t see how we won’t win”
Game 2
Tevin Murray (Rutgers) was electric on the mound for the Gatemen. After a single in the 1stinning Murray sent down 8 batters in a row. Entering the 4thinning Murray already had 4 strikeouts.
“My fastball command was on tonight. Once I got that first out and struck out the second guy, I faced I got into a rhythm on the mound” Murray said. “I was of course a little nervous out there but like I said after the first out I felt like I was immediately locked in.”
Joseph Quintal (Fordham) was also lights out in the early going. The Gatemen did not get a hit until an Adrian Del Castillo (Miami) single in the 4thinning. Quintal did walk 3 batters but already had 5 strikeouts entering the 4th.
The walks became an issue for Quintal as 3 more walks ended his evening. Quintal had a final line of 4.1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 6 BB, 5 SO. That earned run came at the hands of McLain who sent Antico home on a single.
Joe Rock (Ohio) relieved Murray in the 5thinning. Murray had a great outing posting a final line of 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO. Rock struck out 2 of the 1st3 batters he faced in a 1-2-3 inning. Mathis hit a 2 RBI triple down the first base-line in the 6thinning extending the Gatemen lead to 3-0.
“I have pitched in the Big 10 so the talent level is not something I haven’t seen before” Murray said. “I haven’t started since the middle of May, so it’s been a while, but it feels good to be back out there”
Jason Ruffcorn (Oklahoma) came in for Rock in the 6thinning. Ruffcorn didn’t have the outing he would have wanted giving up a 2-run home run to Jared DeSantolo (Florida Atlantic) and then a solo home run to Trevor Hauver (Arizona State).
The inning could have ended before the two home runs happened. With 2 outs Chad Stevens (Portland) misread a pop-up in shallow left resulting in an error. After that the home runs occurred, so all 3 runs were unearned.
The Gatemen had a golden opportunity to break the tie in the 7thinning. Del Castillo hit a double down the first base line and Dallas Beaver was intentionally walked. Both runners were left stranded opening the door for a Hyannis win in the bottom half of the inning.
Ruffcorn had a nice bounce back effort in the 7thinning thwarting any chance of a loss. The Gatemen improve to 21-17-2 and move into 2ndplace in the West Division. The Hyannis Harbor Hawks are now 7-31-2 on the year. With the tie, Hyannis can no longer tie the worst ever CCBL record it set in 2005. The Gatemen are back in action tonight hosting the Cotuit Kettleers at 6:45 p.m.
