Gatemen Win for First Time in 16 Days

The Wareham Gatemen hosted the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox on Tuesday, July 26th. The Gatemen finally won a game after 16 days of winless baseball.

Wareham struck first as they plated a run in the bottom half of the 1st inning. Max Anderson (Nebraska) drew a walk but was out as second on a fielder’s choice, but Chase Davis (Arizona) traded places with him on first. Davis advanced to second on a Brian Morrell (Hofstra) single. William Rogers (Arizona St.) stepped in and laced an RBI single to left to score Davis and make it 1-0.

The Gatemen added on to their lead in the bottom of the 5th inning. Anderson started the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Morrell delivered an RBI single to center to score Anderson and make it 2-0.

The one run an inning trend continued in the bottom of the 6th inning. Deric Fabian (Florida) singled to lead off the inning and stole second to get into scoring position. Carter Graham (Stanford) reached on an infield single that put runners on the corners. Bryan Padilla (UConn) extended Wareham’s lead to 3-0 on an RBI single that scored Fabian.

Yarmouth-Dennis decided to make it a ballgame in the top half of the 7th inning. Hayden Schott (Columbia) ripped a one out single to right. Braden Montgomery (Stanford) then stepped in and roped a two-run home run over the right center wall to cut into the Wareham lead and make it 3-2.

The Gatemen mustered up another run in the bottom half of the 8th inning. Ryan Campos (Arizona St.) drew a pinch hit walk and advanced to second on a Devin Burkes (Kentucky) walk. A throwing error by the pitcher advanced Campos to 3rd and Anderson delivered his fourth hit of the night for an RBI single to make it 4-2.

Wareham walked away with a 4-2 win to improve their record to 12-20-6 on the season. They will travel to Stony Brook Field to take on the Brewster Whitecaps as they look to fight for a playoff spot.
