WAREHAM- 5 run 7thinning sparks comeback 6-5 win over Brewster White Caps
It was a quiet start to the game until the bottom half of the second inning. Dallas Beaver (South Carolina) got on with a walk and Benjamin Sems (Kansas) got on by an error. Chad Stevens (Portland) had a chance to load the bases on a single but didn’t realize there were already 2 men running and got caught in a run-down to end the inning.
Landen Roupp (UNCW) was phenomenal in his first 3 innings of action. Roupp struck out 4 batters and did not allow a hit. Mason Black (Lehigh) had himself a nice start to the game as well not allowing a run on 2 hits in the first 3 innings.
Roupp didn’t slow down striking out 2 batters in the 4thinning. Roupp had his no hitter broke up in the 5thinning. Brewster took advantage of its opportunity scoring off a Jesse Franklin (Michigan) single.
The Whitecaps made it 2-0 off a Cameron Molfetta (Stanford) sacrifice fly. Roupp had his night ended on a Daniel Ellis (Texas) RBI single. Brandon Pfaadt (Bellarmine) relieved Roupp and his final line was 4.1 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO.
Brett Auerbach (Alabama) made it 5-0 on a 2 RBI double into deep right field. The Gatemen finally got some offense in the 7thinning as Adrian Del Castillo (Miami) launched a home run almost dead center making the score 5-1.
Mason Black’s night was ended in the 7thinning. Black was dominant on the night posting a final line of 6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO. Wareham took advantage of Black not being in the game. Seth Lonsway (Ohio State) walked 3 straight batters and a run scored on a wild pitch making it 2-5.
A failed pitch-out made the score 5-3, and Braiden Ward (Washington) made it 5-4 on a sacrifice groundout. Lonsway did not last long finishing with a line of .2 IP, 2 R, 3 BB, 0 SO. Darren Baker (Cal Berkeley) tied up the game at 5-5 on an RBI single.
Michael Webb took over for the Gatemen in the 8thinning. Pfaadt’s final line was 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO. It was a crazy 9thinning for the Gatemen. With the game being tied 5-5, a stevens single, and Antico bunt put two runners on for Ward to win the game. Ward delivered a perfect bunt and an error by the pitcher ended the game.
“I came up with the intention to bunt and luckily the pitcher made a mistake and just like that we won the game” Ward said. “We never really thought we were out of the game we were only down by a few runs and just needed a little offense to comeback.”
Michael Webb was awarded the win for his 2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER performance. William McKay earned the loss with a final line of 1.1 IP, 1 R, 5 H. The Gatemen improve to 16-11-1 on the season while the Brewster White Caps fell to 12-13-1. The Gatemen are back in action tonight hosting the Harwich Mariners at 6:45.
