Gatemen Tie in Lively Matchup at Brewster

The Gatemen traveled to Stony Brook Field to take on the Brewster Whitecaps tonight. After jumping out to a commanding 6-0 lead going into the home half of the 7th, things quickly unraveled for Wareham as the Whitecaps scored seven runs to take the lead.

The Gatemen took a 3-0 lead early on with Ryan Campos’s (Arizona St) extra-base hit in the top of the 1st. Will Rogers (Arizona St) reached on an error, and would advance to second on another error, while Campos came home. Deric Fabian (Florida) had a base but of his own, and advanced on an error as well, a play which would bring home Rogers. Brian Padilla’s (Connecticut) at-bat would bring home Fabian on multiple wild pitches.

The 2nd inning saw no runs, but action picked up again for Wareham with back-to-back one-out singles by Rogers and Fabian. One run would score in both that inning and the 3rd. Carter Graham (Stanford) also hit a solo shot to expand on the Gatemen’s lead.

The 7th inning was atrocious for the Gatemen, allowing seven earned runs which came on four walks, one hit batsmen, a ground rule double and three base hits. 12 Whitecaps would bat in the inning, and Brewster would take a 7-6 lead.

The mess persisted as Gatemen pitching continued to fall apart as CCBL All-Star David Diaz (Vanderbilt) hit a bomb over the right field fencing to tack on to the Whitecaps lead in the 8th.

Wareham had an amazing rally in the top of the 9th, newly signed Gatemen Cam Meyer (Georgetown) cleared the bases with a 3-RBI triple to drive in Fabian, Chase Davis (Arizona, pinch hit) and Padilla. The Gatemen took a 9-8 lead going into the bottom of the 9th for the Whitecaps last chance to walk it off.

Instead, Kurtis Byrne (Texas Christian) leadoff with a shot to center field to tie up the ballgame. That’d be the final score of the night, ending in 9-9.

The two teams will rematch after tomorrow’s day at Spillane Field on Friday. First pitch is set for 6:00pm.
