Gatemen strand 10 men on base in 3-1 loss to Red Sox in Yarmouth

YARMOUTH- For the second night in a row the Gatemen offense sputtered only being able to produce 1 run on 7 hits in 3-1 loss to the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox
Wareham did not get a hit the first two innings but Jacob Teter (Florida Southern) provided a spark in the 3rdinning. Teter got all of a pitch smoking it over the right field fence giving the Gatemen a 1-0 lead. Adrian Del Castillo followed up by hitting his 4thdouble of the season but was stranded at 2nd.
“I finally got into a hitters count and was looking for that fastball and once I saw that fastball, I got it to go just where I wanted” Teter said. “
Brandon Pfaadt (Bellarmine) had another great outing for the Gatemen but an error by Darren Baker (Cal Berkeley) in the 4thinning proved costly scoring a run on a play that could have ended the inning.
Pfaadt couldn’t seem to catch a break as Del Castillo advanced a runner to 2ndand 3rdon a passed ball with only 1 out in the inning. However, Pfaadt’s defense repaid the favor as a double play ended the inning limiting to the damage to 1 run.
Levi Prater (Oklahoma) took over for the Gatemen in the 5thinning. Pfaadt’s final line was 4 innings pitched allowing 1 run on 3 hits striking out 4 batters. The Gatemen has a great chance to take the lead in the 5thinning. Baker hit a single and made his way all the way to 3rdbase after a stolen base and passed ball. However, Baker was stranded on base.
As per the theme of the game In the 6thinning Wareham once again had an opportunity to take the lead. Benjamin Sems (Kansas) hit a single and Dallas Beaver (South Carolina) hit a double putting 2 runners in scoring position. Unfortunately, Matt Rudick (San Diego State) grounded out to end the inning.
The turning point of the game was the 7thinning. Prater left a pitch high up in the zone and Tate Samuelson (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) launched a home run giving Yarmouth-Dennis a 2-1 lead. Wyatt Young (Pepperdine) sent home another run on an RBI single extending the Red Sox lead to 3-1.
That 2-run lead was all the Red Sox needed as Cullen Kafka (Oregon) and Taylor Dollard (San Poly San Luis Obispo) kept the Gatemen off the scoreboard for 4 innings to close out the game. Kafka was awarded the win for his 3 innings of scoreless baseball and is now 2-0 on the season. Dollard earned the save for only allowing 1 hit in the 9thinning.
Things did get a little bit dicey for Dollard in the 9thinning. Rudick opened the inning with a single and Baker reached first base on a fielder’s choice. In stepped Teter who hit a home run earlier and had a chance to tie the game, but he struck out to end it.
“The Red Sox strung together hits when it counted” Teter said. “We had guys in scoring position all night and were threatening but unfortunately we just needed that one extra hit and we didn’t have it tonight.”
John Beller (USC) also had a nice outing for Yarmouth-Dennis going 5 innings only allowing 1 run on 4 hits. Beller got into a few sticky situation throughout the game but his defense came through for him when he needed help. Prater received the loss for allowing 2 runs in his 3 innings of work.
A few players had unusual off-nights for the Gatemen. Braiden Ward (Washington) was 0-5, Matt McLain (UCLA) was 0-4, and Mike Antico (St. Johns) was 0-3 with 2 strikeouts. As for the Red Sox Young was 2-4 with an RBI, Austin Wells (Arizona) was 2-4, and Riley King (Georgia) was 2-4.
Because Cotuit defeated the Bourne Braves last night 4-1, the Kettleers move up to 1stplace in the Western Division bumping the Gatemen down to 2ndplace. Wareham is now 9-8-1 on the season one point behind the Kettleers who have a 9-7-2 record. Yarmouth-Dennis improved to 10-6-1 on the season and are now tied for second place in the Eastern Division with the Chatham Anglers.
The Gatemen are back in action tonight hosting the Hyannis Bourne Braves at 6:45 p.m.
