Cotuit topples Wareham in West Division standings

WAREHAM- A rough night for the Gatemen pitching results in a 11-5 loss to the Cotuit Kettleers
William Fleming came out throwing hard but couldn’t find his control. Casey Schmitt (San Diego State) hit a 2 RBI double down the right field line giving the Kettleers a 2 run lead in the 1st inning. Mason McWhorter (Georgia Southern) hit a double of his own sending home Cotuit’s 3rdrun.
Wareham had a chance to strike back in the bottom half of the inning. The bases were loaded for Mike Antico (St. Johns). Antico came into the game 1-5 on the season with the bases loaded and he couldn’t deliver grounding out to end the inning.
Robert Martin (Florida State) made his first hit of the CCBL season count hitting a triple into deep right. Nick Gonzales tallied his 19thRBI of the season sending home Martin on a deep sac-fly that almost left the ball park making the score 4-0.
Braiden Ward (Washington) hit a stand up double in the 2ndinning to put 2 runners in scoring position. Darren Baker (Cal Berkeley) unfortunately grounded out to end the inning. Cole Larsen (Kansas) made his CCBL debut for the Gatemen in the 4thinning. Fleming’s final line was 3 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO.
Tora Otsuka (San Diego) hit an RBI triple over the head of Parker Chavers (Coastal Carolina) to make the score 4-1. The Gatemen came into the game batting .303 with runners in scoring position with 92 RBI and 5 HR.

Schmitt hit his 4thhome run of the season in the 5thinning extending the Kettleers lead to 5-1. For the second time of the night Sam Ferri (Arizona State) showed off his arm throwing out a runner trying to take 2ndto end the 6thinning.

Larsen had a very shaky 6thinning as 2 singles and an error put runners on the corners. Bejnamin Sems (Kanasa) made an amazing diving play but couldn’t complete the double play. Gonzales sent home a run making it 6-1.
Cole Stetzar (St. Josephs) took over for the Gatemen in the 6thinning with 2 outs and a runner on 3rd. Larsen’s final line was 2.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO. Stetzar did not start well as Scmitt hit his 3rdextra base hit of the night sending home 2 runs making the score 8-1. McWhorter hit a double himself making the score 10-1.
Chavers launched a home run over the right field fence making it 11-1. Matt Rudick hit a 2 RBI single in the 8thmaking the score 11-3. Otsuka hit an RBI sacrifice making the score 11-4. Matt McLain (UCLA) hit an RBI single in the 9thmaking the score 11-5. Stetzar played well for the situation he was thrusted into. His final line was 3.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 7 SO.
Gonzales went 2-4 with 2 RBI, Allbry Major (Xavier) went 3-5, Schmitt was 3-4 with 5 RBI, and McWhorter was 3-5 with 3 RBI. As for the Gatemen Otsuka finished 2-3 with 2 RBI, and McLain was 2-4 with 1 RBI.
Matt Moore (Purdue) was awarded the win for pitching 3 innings of run-less baseball and Richard Brereton (Emory) closed the game out to earn the save. William Fleming never found his stuff earning the loss.
The Wareham Gatemen fell to 12-11-1 on the season while the Cotuit Kettleers improved to 12-10-2. The Gatemen are back in action tonight on the road against the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox at 5:00 p.m.
