FALMOUTH – The Gatemen pitching staff turned in an excellent outing as they allowed just six hits and three runs to score all evening against the Commodores. The problem? Falmouth one upped the Wareham pitching staff and did not surrender a run.
The Commodores shutout the Gatemen 3-0 to record their 14th win of the season and ran their record to .500 on the season (14-14-1). With the loss, the Gatemen have now been shutout two times this season with their first such result coming in a 2-0 loss to Harwich back on June 16.
Falmouth used three pitchers, Tyler Dyson, Mitchell Miller, and Nick Mikolajchak, to shutout the Gatemen. They allowed three hits all night and allowed just three free passes.
“It’s a combination of two things. The umpire probably had the biggest zone of any umpire since we’ve been here,” Don Sneddon said. “Plus they had some good pitching. If you put those two things together, it’s tough to hit and we just didn’t get it done.”
Dyson (1-1, 1.80 ERA) held Wareham down all night as he only allowed three Gatemen to reach base (one hit and two walks) in a winning effort. None of the Gatemen hitters to reach base versus Dyson advanced past first base.
Dyson had the strikeout pitch working throughout this one as he recorded punchouts in all five of his innings and had eight total on the night. In the first, third, and fifth, Dyson struck out two hitters in each of those innings. For good measure, Dyson also had a strike out in the second and fourth.
“We matched him [Dyson] almost pitched for pitch. Cavalli threw a changeup in that situation, which is not what we want to throw in that situation, and he left it up. Give them credit, one guy hitting two home runs is pretty impressive,” Sneddon said.
The aforementioned Cade Cavalli (0-1, 3.60 ERA) changeup came on an 0-1 count to Austin Langworthy in the bottom of the first with two down. Langworthy put a good swing on the ball hit it over the right field fence for a solo homer, putting Falmouth ahead 1-0.

Cavalli would last just an inning more as he threw a scoreless frame in the bottom of the second, but he was pulled after three pitches in the third.
Pitching coach Jim Lawler made a trip to the mound as the count reached 2-1 on Matt Wallner. Cavalli was pulled during the middle of the at bat due to tightness in his bicep, making way for Derek West to enter the game.
“He had a little tightness in his bicep and we don’t take any chances at all with kids. I don’t think it’s anything major, but we got him out of there just to be sure,” Sneddon said.
West allowed Wallner to reach on a single, but he then proceeded to retire the next three hitters in order. On the night, West went five innings without allowing a run and he only allowed on more hit after the initial hitter he faced.
In the strange game that is known as baseball, tonight’s appearance for West is his first official appearance of the summer, but it is not his real Gatemen debut.
West first appeared in the protested game against Hyannis that took place on July 8. However, those stats are not official yet because the game has not been completed. For now, West’s ERA will sit at 0.00 following his outing tonight.
“He did awesome. He got the fastball over, enough command with that. He did exactly what we needed him to do, keep us in the ballgame so we had a chance to win it right until the end,” Sneddon said.
In the eighth, Langworthy capped off his night with his second home run of the game and fourth of his Cape Cod season. This time, the homer counted for two runs as the Commodroes took a 3-0 lead and would go on to win by that same score. Nathan Florence was the pitcher on the mound for Wareham as he pitched the final inning of the night for the Gatemen.
“We held them, and they did not get it going either until we made a mistake there in the eighth and it put the knife in our back right there,” Sneddon said.
Final: Commodores 3, Gatemen 0
Next up: The Gatemen (17-11-1) will be home Sunday night to play the Harwich Mariners (13-16-1). First pitch at 5:30 p.m. at Spillane Field in Wareham.
