CHATHAM – The Wareham Gatemen were 12 outs from a title. Then, the fog rolled in. Before the bottom of the sixth began, play was halted due to a tremendous amount of fog that had settled upon Veterans Field.
That’s right, in Game 2 of the Cape Cod Baseball League Championship Series, there was a fog delay. Ultimately, the delay turned into a suspension as the game will now resume today at 1 p.m. with the Gatemen up 4-1 and a chance to close out the series.
“I promised these guys that today would be the last bus ride we made all summer. Now I have to east my words. It is what it is. There’s nothing you can do about it. It doesn’t do any good to worry about it. We will just come back and play,” Gatemen manager Don Sneddon said last night.

Things were looking good for Wareham as they tried to capture their first CCBL title since 2012. With a 1-0 lead in the best of three series, Game 2 is a clinching scenario.
Wareham got off to a strong start in this potential clincher with an excellent performance from Derek West. The right hander from the University of Pittsburgh pitched five innings and allowed just one run before being pulled for Carter Bach in the sixth.
Offensively, the Gatemen have had some timely hits so far to drive in their four runs. Austin Shenton and Lael Lockhart Jr. each have two RBIs in this contest.
Despite the good start, Sneddon and his Gatemen club know the game and season is still far from over.
“We still have a way to go with this thing. We will just comeback and pick it up and play from there,” Sneddon said. “We have to have some good pitching. In this ballpark, that is not enough runs. Nothing is safe.”
Before the game was officially suspended, a half hour delay occurred as officials tried to see if the fog would pass through. The wait for the fans in center field did not seem too long as they began to play football with Gatemen LHP Brendan Cellucci.
“There was this one fan in center field who just kept asking us to throw the ball and [Ryan] Kreidler ended up throwing it to him and then everybody started asking for it and it kind of snowballed from there,” Cellucci said.
By the end of it, six different players, a coach, and the bullpen catcher were all standing in the outfield tossing around the football with a mob of kids beyond the centerfield fence.
“It ended up that there was a bunch of kids out there and we were throwing the ball with them and having fun,” Cellucci said. “Because of the fog, it took away from our competitiveness for a second and we tried to have fun and make the best of the moment.”
