07/29/08 – YD Gets to Workman – Defeat Gatemen 8-4 at Red Wilson Field
The YD Red Sox scored 7 runs off of Brandon Workman (Texas) in the 2nd inning and went on to defeat the Wareham Gatemen 8-4 in Yarmouth 8-4. All-Star Game Home Run Contest runner-up DeAngelo Mack (South Carolina) highlighted the 7 run 2nd inning with his first homer of the season into the woods in right field. Ryan Ortiz (Oregon State) also contributed with a 2-run double. Workman was pulled with 1 out in the second inning, striking out 1 and allowing 7 earned runs.
The Wareham bullpen combination of Matt Way (Washington State) and Zach Brewster (Georgia Tech) pitched well; giving the Gatemen a chance to ge back into the game. They combined to allow only 1 run, striking out 4 and scattering 4 hits.
The Gatemen actually had a 1-0 lead early in the game. Ryan Pineda (Cal-State Northridge) hit his 15th extra base hit of the season and scored on an Aaron Baker (Oklahoma) rbi single in the first inning. Baker and Steve Liddle (Vanderbilt), had 2 hits apiece and accounted for 4 of the 9 Wareham hits.
Wareham did score 2 in the 5th on back to back doubles by Liddle and Buddy Munroe (Florida); who knocked in Liddle for an rbi. Raynor Cambell (Baylor) singled to knock in another Gatemen run and cut the score to 8-3. A Cole Leonida (Georgia Tech) ground-out in the 9th would score a run account for Wareham’s 4th and final run.
The Gatemen drop to 14-22-1 on the season and remain in last place in the CCBL Western Division. Wareham is off tomorrow as all of the Cape Cod League All-Stars will be honored at Fenway Park in Boston prior to the Red Sox game vs. the Los Angeles Angels.
