07/21/08 – Workman Pitches Gatemen to 4-1 Victory at Lowell Park
CCBL All-Star pitcher Brandon Workman (Texas) goes 7 innings and allows only 1 run as the Wareham Gatemen defeated the Cotuit Ketteers 4-1 in a 5:00pm start at Lowell Park late this afternoon. Workman’s 3rd victory of the season was supported by Ryan Pineda (Cal-State Northridge) and Raynor Cambell (Baylor) who continue to remain hot at the very top of the Gatemen lineup.

Wareham scored first when Raynor Cambell hit a lead off homerun in the top of the 3rd inning. Cotuit came right back in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrafice fly by Brett Jackson (UC-Berkley). Workman would get out of the inning and leave 2 on base on a line-out to second to end the inning.

The Gatemen loaded the bases in the 6th; helped by back-to-back lead-off singles by Pineda and Blake Dean (LSU). Jake Lemmerman (Duke) would get an rbi the hard way when he was hit by a pitch. A Connor Rowe (Texas) sacrafice fly would plate the second run of the inning and give Wareham a 3-1 lead.

Workman was relieved by Zach Brewster (Georgia Tech) at the beginning of the 8th inning. Workman struck out 8 Kettleers to up his league leading total on the season to 58. He allowed only 1 run, scattered 5 hits and did not walk a batter. He takes a 2.12 era into the All-Star break.

Brewster pitched 2 shutout innings in relief for the Gatemen and picked up his first save on the season. He struck out 2, allowed 1 hit and struck out 1 batter. Pineda finished 3 for 4 and has raised his season batting average to .300. Cambell hit the homerun, stole a base and hit a single; raising his average to a CCBL 9th best .330.

The Gateman will play Falmouth today on the beautiful island of Martha’s Vineyard at a special time of 1:00pm. The game will be broadcast by the Falmouth Commodore broadcast team. Robby Broach (Tulane) will get the start for the Gatemen.
