ORLEANS, MA: Wareham had played five one-run games going into Saturday’s rematch with Orleans at Spillane Field. On June 30, the Gatemen fell to the Firebirds 2-0 at Eldredge Park. Orleans is a beatable team and it showed that Wareham had the capability because of the small margin of victory for the Firebirds last time out.
It was a rematch of Gator arms on the bump. Bobby Poyner (Florida) took the hill for Orleans and Tucker Simpson (Florida) for Wareham. All scoring was decided in the fifth inning. Simpson and Poyner were dynamite until that inning, and both pitchers were still pretty decent.
Kevin Kramer (UCLA) led off the fifth with a double and advanced to third on a 3-1 putout for Riley Moore. Then Angelo La Bruna (Duke) singled, scoring Kramer to make it 1-0 Orleans. Wareham made its comeback in the bottom of the fifth. Trevor Podratz (Hawaii) continues to swing a hot bat. He led off the inning with a single and then Willie Schwanke (Arkansas) singled moving Podratz to second.
Manager Cooper Farris has been working on laying down the perfect bunt with his team ever since the season started and it went to show for it when Ethan Gross (Memphis) put down a very successful sacrifice bunt to move Schwanke to second and Podratz to third. Chris Chinea (LSU) grounded out to second for the second out of the inning but it scored Podratz.
Louisville’s Danny Rosenbaum has had a silent bat since his arrival in Wareham, but it broke open on Saturday when he singled to second base driving in Schwanke for the second Gatemen run. That was all that was needed, a 2-1 victory for the Gatemen.
Simpson got the win. He pitched five and two-thirds innings giving up just the one earned run but giving up seven hits, two walks and striking out four. Poyner got the loss, but he went seven strong innings giving up the two runs on five hits no walks and four strikeouts.
Andro Cutura (Southeastern Louisiana) came in and got the save in the ninth, his first of the season. Wareham now enters a stretch of four straight on the road. It will take on Y-D at Red Wilson Field on Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
