WAREHAM, MA: LHP Brent Suter (Harvard) pitched a complete game (7 innings) and Ty Ross (LSU) broke a 3-3 tie late in the game with a 2-out, 2-RBI single to propel the Wareham Gatemen to a 5-3 victory over the Brewster Whitecaps in game 1 of a scheduled double-header at Spillane Field.
Knowing it was important to his team to pitch as many innings as possilbe in the first game of a scheduled double-header, Brent Suter came through and preserved the entire Gatemen bullpen by pitching 7 innings, allowing 6 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), striking out 4 and giving up only 2 walks. (7 innings are scheduled when teams are playing double-headers in the CCBL & NCAA)
Suter would give up an unearned run in the first inning on a grounder by Taylor Davis (Morehead State) but Wareham would strike back in the 2nd inning to tie the game. After a Tyler Ross (LSU) single that put Gatemen runners on 1st and 3rd, Suter’s Harvard teammate Jeff Reynold’s sacrafice fly resulted in the first tie of the game. However, in the very next inning, the Whitecaps would take the lead right back 2-1 on an error by the Wareham catcher.
William Carmona (Stony Brook) and Max Muncy (Baylor) both walked to lead off Wareham’s half of the third inning. After a wild pitch moved both runners up, Derek Dennis (Michigan) hit an opposite field grounder to score Carmona; resulting in the game’s second tie, 2-2.
Brewster starter Ben Klimesh (Trinity) was pulled in favor of Billy Soule (Minnesota) to start the bottom of the 4th inning. With two outs, Soule was the victim of an error by the Whitecap’s third baseman that allowed Tyler Ross to score and by doing so, give the Gatemen their first lead of the game 3-2. Considering how this game was being played out, it wasn’t surprising to see Brewster strike right back in the 5th inning.
Ryan Jones (Michigan State) led off the 5th with a single and then stole 2nd base. This set the stage for a Steve Tkoswski (Holy Cross) rbi single that tied this game for the third time in 4 1/2 innings..
Seemingly moving through the inning with ease by inducing Max Muncy (Baylor) to fly out and striking out Daniel Palka (Georgia Tech), Soule hit Derek Dennis to put him on first and then gave up a double to Robert Reysnyder (Arizona). That provided the opportunity for Tyler Ross to drive in what proved to be the winning runs in this terrific game at Spillane Field.
Suter comfortably cruised through the 6th and 7th innings and Wareham improved to 2-1 on the season by defeating the Brewster Whitecaps in game 1 of the double-header.
Tyler Ross was the offensive star of the game for the Gatemen; going 2 for 2 with a walk and those 2 game winning rbi. Johnny Field (Arizona) collected at hit to go along with his 2 stolen bases.
