WAREHAM, Mass. Eric Pfisterer (Duke) picked up his 3rd win of the season and combined with relievers Keith Bilodeau (Maine) and David Fischer (UCONN) to not allow a hit after the first inning as the Wareham Gatemen won their third straight game and defeated the Chatham Anglers 5-1 at Spillane Field. This win over the Eastern Division leader Anglers is Wareham’s 3rd straight and at 10-8-1, they remain in 2nd place in the Western Division.
Chatham put up their only run of the game in the first inning. Whit Merrifield (South Carolina) singled to lead off the game and was followed by an infield single by Tom Belza (Oklahoma State) that resulted in a Wareham throwing error; putting runners at 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. An unusual double-play that resulted in Merrifield being thrown out at the plate appeared to get the Gatemen out of this first inning jam but Rick Oropesa’s (USC) rbi single gave Chatham a 1-0 lead. Oropesa’s hit would prove to be the Angler’s last hit of the ballgame as Pfisterer would settle in and set the stage for a terrific night for the Wareham pitching staff.
The Gatemen half of the 2nd inning proved to be an uncharacteristically sloppy one for Chatham. Wareham scored 4 runs on only 2 hits but walked twice and took advantage of 2 Chatham errors and 3 passed balls as the Gatemen sent 8 players to the plate. Tyler Albright (Harvard) & Derek Dietrich (Georgia Tech) provided Wareham’s 2 hits of the inning. The four runs gave Wareham a 4-1 lead and they would never look back as Pfisterer, Bilodeau and Fischer would do a masterful job preserving the lead and shutting down the Anglers.
Wareham’s last run came in the 3rd inning. Alex Dickerson’s (Indiana) 2nd triple of the season was followed up 2 batters later by a Ryan LaMarre (Michigan) sacrifice fly to score Dickerson and give the Gatemen a 5-1 lead.
Pfisterer picked up his 3rd win of the season; a total that ties him for the league lead with teammate Jack Armstrong (Vanderbilt) and Hyannis’ Austin Hudson (Central Florida). His 26 strikeouts are tied for 3rd in the league and his era has been lowered to 1.65. Keith Bilodeau and David Fischer each made the team leading 7th appearance and have solidified a solid Gatemen bullpen. Fischer struck out the side in the 9th inning last night; the 2nd consecutive game where the Wareham bullpen closed the game in that fashion. Wareham is 8-0 when leading after 7 innings this season. Shawn Tolleson (Baylor) took the loss for the Anglers.
Zach Wilson (Arizona State) extended his hitting streak to 10 games and has hit .361 over that stretch. Wilson was 2 for 4 last night against Chatham.
The Gatemen are back in action today as they will hop on the ferry and head out to the island of Martha’s Vineyard to play the Falmouth Commodores at 1:00pm. Matt Barners (UCONN) will face Taylor Wall (Rice) in this “home” game for the Commodores. Tune into out live broadcast beginning at 12:45 with the pregame show for our first road broadcast of the year.
