WAREHAM, MA: The first place Hyannis Harbor Hawks handed the Wareham Gatemen their third loss in a row with a 5-3 win at Spillane Field on Wednesday night.
The Gatemen (10-12) went toe to toe with the Cape League’sbest team for 7 innings, but Cal Towey’s (Baylor) go ahead single in the 8th helped spur the Harbor Hawks (15-7) to a 5-3 win Wednesday night at Spillane Field.
The Gatemen started the scoring in the first. John Andreoli (UConn) singled with one out, was moved to second on a sac bunt by Robert Refsnyder (Arizona), and came around to score on Max Muncy’s (Baylor) RBI single.
The Harbor Hawks then scored the game’s next three runs. Kevin Plawecki (Purdue) scored on a fielder’s choice hit by Chadd Krist (Cal) in the top of the second, Dan Gulbransen (Jacksonville) came into score on when Adam Walker (Jacksonville) singled up the middle in the fifth, and Krist scored an inning later on Eric Stamets’s (Evansville) two out bunt single.
Gatemen starter Matthew Grimes (Georgia Tech) left in the sixth, after allowing 3 earned runs on 8 hits. Wareham came right back against the league’s top team in the bottom of the sixth. Willie Carmona (Stony Brook) led off the inning with a single. Ty Ross (LSU) followed with a base knock of his own, and Mott Hyde (Georgia Tech) walked. Carmona scored on a wild pitch and then Andreoli brought home Ross with a grounder to second that knotted things up at 3.
Hyannis took the lead for good in the 8th though. Towey’s single brought home Krist to make it 4-3, then Towey came around on a sharp single by Stamets to cap the scoring.
Dietrich Enns (Central Michigan) tossed two scoreless frames to pick up the save.
Wareham is back in action Thursday night at 6 PM at Bourne.
