WAREHAM, MA: The CCBL All-Star break might be a good thing for the Wareham Gatemen (18-20) at this point of the season as the offensive fell flat once again and the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (17-17-4) handed the Gatemen their 4th straight loss at a rainy Monday night at Spillane Field.
Things looked good early for Gatemen starter Luke Farrell (Northwestern) as he pitched a scorelss first inning before his offense gave him an early 1-0. LJ Mazzilli (UCONN) singled for his first of three hits on the night and later scored on Max Muncy’s (Baylor) 19th rbi of the season; a sacrafice fly.
YD responded immediately and Red Sox starting pitcher Brian Johnson (Florida) helped his own cause with a leadoff single to start the 2nd inning. With two outs in the inning, he scored one of two runs driven in on the double by Chris Taylor (Virginia) and the Sox led 2-1.
Harwich added 3 runs in the 5th and another in the 9th and Wareham could not match that production. The Gatemen did score a run in the 5th inning but that was it as they went on to lose 6-2. Farrell lasted only 4.1 innings and the Gatemen bullpen got a lot of work as Daniel Feehan (UCONN), Dillon Newman (Baylor), Andy Flett (Louisville) and even OF CT Bradford (Mississippi State) all saw action.
The Wareham offense managed only 5 hits; led by Mazzilli’s 3 hits. The winning pitcher was Brian Johnson who also went 2 for 4 at the plate and drove in a run.
The Gatemen will look to snap their 4 game losing streak when the travel to Harwich for a 7:00pm game on Tuesday night in one of two game remaining before the All-Star Break.
