Wareham Leaves Too Many On Base – Cotuit Wins 8-3

07/17/08 – Wareham Leaves Too Many On Base – Cotuit Wins 8-3
The Wareham Gatemen offense left 12 on base last night but that was just part of the story as the defense committed 4 errors and they also did have their best night on the mound as the Cotuit Kettleers took an 8-3 victory at Spillane Field. The Gatemen managed only 6 hits and despite leaving those 12 runners on base, produced only 1 rbi; a Ryan Pineda (Cal-State Northridge) double that scored Raynor Cambell (Baylor) in the 3rd inning as part of a 2-run inning that tied the scored at 2-2.

After scoring two runs in the second, Cotuit broke the game open in the very next inning capped by a 3 run homer by Jason Kipnis (Arizona State). An Evan Crawford (Indiana) rbi double preceded the homer and Cotuit led 6-2. Gatemen starting pitcher Robby Broach (Tulane) went 6 innings, allowed 5 earned runs on 9 hits and drops to 1-4 on the season.

Raynor Cambell gets the first of his three hits on the night vs. Bourne

Wareham starter Brandon Workman (Texas) did not allow a hit through 5 innings and flirted with the idea of taking another no-hitter late into the game. However, a Jordan Henry (Mississippi) infield single in the 6th and a Dusty Coleman (Wichita State) bunt single broke up the no-hit bid. With the bases loaded, Workman got Marc Krauss to ground into a double play but it allowed a run to score and the game was tied 1-1. Another infield single, this time by Kyle Roller (East Carolina) put the Braves ahead 2-1.

Workman was lifted with 1 out and 1 on base in the 7th inning and turned the ball over to Auston Graham (Alabama) and eventually to Matt Way (Washington State). Both relievers proceeded to each walk home a base runner with the bases loaded; increading the Bourne lead to 4-1.

The Gatemen offense came back in the 8th inning to score 3 runs; to tie the game once again. A Jake Lemmerman (Duke) single started off the inning and resulted in Bourne starting pitcher Nick McCully (Coastal Carolina) being lifted for David Erikson (UConn). Erikson walked Raynor Cambell and Ryan Pineda collected a single to load the bases. A passed ball scored Lemmerman to bring Wareham to within 2 runs. After a Blake Dean (LSU) pop up, Aaron Baker (Oklahoma) drove in a run on an rbi groundout. Kipp Shutz (Indiana) doubled to drive in a run and tie the game 4-4. Later in the inning, Shutz got caught off the bag on third base to end the inning during a stolen base attempt by Connor Rowe (Texas) who had reached base on a field error.

Brandon Workman made another dominant start for Wareham

Matt Way would get 3 outs in the 8th for Wareham; giving the Gatemen a chance to take the lead in the top of the 9th. However, despite a lead-off single by Shea Vucinich (Washington State), Wareham was unable to score against relieve Eric Pettis (UC-Irvine). Way was trotted back out to the mound in the 9th and gave up the lead off triple before eventually surrendering the walk-off single.

Brandon Workman’s 9 strikeouts gives him 50 on the season and he continues to lead the CCBL in that category. Raynor Cambell’s 3 hits propel his average to .330; good for 10th in the league.

The Gatemen drop to 9-18-1 on the season and play Cotuit on Thursday night at 7:00pm in Wareham. Robby Broach (Tulane) is the scheduled starter for Wareham and he will face Nate Garcia (UC – Santa Clara).
