Wareham Hangs On For Win – Takes Season Opener Over Cotuit

At the end of five innings, it would have been tough to guess that the much anticipated season opener would come down to the final out, as the Gatemen edged out the visiting Cotuit Kettleers 5-4.

The Gatemen (1-0) got five innings of no-hit baseball from starting pitcher Eric Pfisterer. (Duke) Pfisterer allowed just four baserunners over that span and was pulled after five innings with the no-hitter still in tact due to a rising pitch count.  He struck out 10 Kettleers.  He got plenty of run support from the Wareham lineup, as the Gatemen came out swinging in the first inning.

Derrick Dietrich(Georgia Tech) started a string of four straight hits off of Cotuit starter Mike Nesseth.  Alex Dickerson (Indiana) singled home Dietrich to put the Gatemen up 1-0.  Ryan Pineda, (Cal-State Northridge) who went 3-4 with three singles, scored on a passed ball to make the score 2-0, and Dickerson and George Springer (UCONN) came around to score on a throwing error by third baseman Drew Hillman.

The Kettleers cut into the 4-0 Gatemen lead against the Wareham bullpen.  Matt Barnes (UCONN)came in to relieve Pfisterer and gave up two runs in the sixth inning, cutting the Gatemen lead in half.  Wareham added some insurance in the bottom of the seventh, as Dietrich reached base on a throwing error from Cotuit second baseman Chris Bisson and was later singled home by George Springer, making it 5-2 Gatemen after seven.

Bullpen woes plagued Wareham in the late innings, however.  A two-out error on Gatemen first baseman Cole Leonida on a throw from Pineda allowed pinch runner Zach Cone to score from third, cutting the Gatemen lead to 5-3 in the eighth.  Wareham’s Nick Pepitone (Tulane) was on in the ninth for his second inning of relief and allowed Cody Stanley to reach on a leadoff walk.  After a groundout, Kevin Patterson singled home Stanley to make it a one-run ballgame, with Wareham leading 5-4.

Brendan Kelleher doubled to left center, putting runners on second and third with just one out.  Cotuit attempted a squeeze play, but Jeff Rowland popped up the bunt to the catcher Chris Hannick for the second out, and Pepitone forced a flyout from Zach Cole to end the game.

The Gatemen return to action Sunday evening with a 5:30 contest at Bourne (0-2).  RHP Scott Rembisz (Florida International) will start the game on the mound for Wareham.
