WAREHAM, MA: After having their 3 game winning streak broken by Hyannis last night, Josh Turley (Baylor) pitched 6 strong innings to help the Wareham Gatemen down the Bourne Braves in the opening game of the annual back to back July 4th holiday games 3-2.
The Braves jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to a Colin Moran (North Carolina) rbi single. Bourne starter Chris Pickering (Rhode Island) protected that lead through 3 innings before Wareham tied the game on a Johnny Field (Arizona) ground-out that scored Max Muncy (Baylor).
The Gatemen went ahead for good in the 5th inning. Consecutive singles by Brandon Thomas (Georgia Tech) and John Andreoli (UCONN) with one out allowed Wareham to push two runs across. LJ Mazzilli (UCONN) grounded to shortstop; driving in the go ahead run and Max Muncy singled to drive in Wareham’s 3rd run – his 11th RBI of the season that now ties him for 5th in the league.
Turley completed the 6th inning before giving way to the Gatemen bullpen. He finished the game allowing only 1 run, 5 hits, 3 strikeouts and a walk. Josh Urban (Texas) was first out of the Gatemen pen but after allowing a single and then a walk, exited the game due to an injury. Barrett Astin (Arkansas) was summoned to warm up quickly and did a nice job limiting the Braves to only a single run; an rbi groundout by CCBL RBI leader Travis Jankowski (Stony Brook).
Astin remained in the game to complete the 8th inning and Head Coach Cooper Farris handed the ball to Gatemen closer Konner Wade (Arizona) who pitched a perfect inning to collect his league leading 5th save. Wade has saved exactly half of Wareham’s 10 wins and has emerged as the anchor for the Gatemen bullpen.
Also emerging as one of the top offensive threats for the Gatemen is OF John Andreoli. He collected 3 more hits and has raised his batting average to .457 but thanks to UCONN’s advancement to the Super Regionals, he is just shy of having enough at bats to find his name at the top of the league leaders in that category.
The Gatemen will play Bourne again tomorrow at Doran Park at 4:00pm in the annual July 4th game. John Farrell (Northwestern) will be tomorrow’s starting pitcher and he will face Ryan Eades (LSU) who will be the starter for the Braves.
Wareham improves to 10-9 and remains in 2nd place in the Western Division; tied with Falmouth. Both teams are 6 points behind division leader Hyannis. Bourne drops to 3rd place; only 2 points behind the Gatemen and Commodores.
