Wareham Bounces Back to Defeat Falmouth 7-5

BOX SCORE

FALMOUTH, MA:  Losers of two straight, the Wareham Gatemen rebounded with a 7-5 win over Falmouth to extend their lead over the Commodores to 4 points; remaining in 3rd place in the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Western Division.  In doing so, the Gatemen return to the .500 level and stand at 16-16 on the season.

Originally an off-day for the Gatemen, this game was played as a make-up of an earlier game that was postponed due to fog at Guv Fuller Field.  This game was also in question early on as showers moved through the area and delayed this game 48 minutes.  When the rain did stop and field was readied, the Gatemen jumped out to a fast start.

LJ Mazzilli (UCONN) led off the game with one of his two hits on the night.  His UCONN teammate John Andreoli followed with a bunt single and both players advanced on a ground ball; with Mazzilli later scoring on a Max Muncy (Baylor) sacrafice fly.  A passed ball allowed Andreoli to score and the Gatemen jumped out to 2-0 first inning lead on Falmouth and starting pitcher Andrew Aizenstadt (Babson).

Gatemen starting pitcher Luke Farrell (Northwestern) was greeted similarly by the Commodores as a wild pitch result in one run and a Spencer Kieboom (Clemson) rbi single tied this game after one inning.

Robert Refsnyder (Arizona) hit his 4th triple of the season with two outs in the 3rd inning and later scored on a wild pitch; putting the Gatemen up 3-2.  Refsnyder now stands tied for 2nd in the CCBL in triples.

As Farrell settled down and at one point retired 9 straight Falmouth batters, Brandon Thomas (Georgia Tech) hit a triple of his own in the 6th inning to score Johnny Field (Arizona).  William Carmona (Stony Brook) drove Thomas home with his 10th rbi of the season and the Gatemen extended their lead to 5-2.

Dillon Newman (Baylor) replaced Farrell in the bottom half of the 6th inning and pitched two perfect innings to preserve the Wareham lead.  The Gatemen added two runs in the 8th inning on a Daniel Palka (Georgia Tech) double and on yet another wild pitch to take a comfortable 7-2 lead heading into the final two innings.

Newman ran into some trouble in the bottom of the 8th.  After allowing 3 consecutive singles and allowing runs on a wild pitch and a Spencer Kieboom single, Newman was lifted with a 2-0 count to Jared King (Kansas State).  Wareham closer Konner Wade (Arizona) was summoned an inning early and didn’t disapoint.  He induced a groundout and a dramatic inning-end strikeout to keep Falmouth 2 runs down at 7-5.

Wade returned to the mound in the 9th inning and pitched a perfect inning to record his league leading 7th save.

Eight of the nine players in the Gatemen lineup had at least one hit on the night; including 2-hit games by Mazzilli, Refsnyder, Field and Carmona.  Refsnyder raised his average to .307 and is 7th in the CCBL.  Luke Farrell picked up his 3rd win of the season and is now 3-3 overall.

Wareham is right back at it today as they travel to Brewster to take the CCBL Eastern Division leading Whitecaps at 5:00pm.  Bobby Brosnahan (Michigan) will be Wareham’s starting pitcher.
