06/29/08 – Wareham and Brewster Play to 5-5 Tie
Steve Liddle (Vanderbilt) hit a dramatic, bases loaded triple to give the Gatemen a 5-4 lead in the top of the 8th inning only to see the Whitecaps tie the game in the bottom of the 9th. The game was called after 9 innings due to darkness and resulted in a 5-5 tie. The Gatemen trailed throughout the game as the Whitecaps scored 2 in the first and 2 more in the 4th. The Gatemen lone run before the 4-run 8th inning came off of the bat of Liddle; who hit his first of 2 triples on the night, scoring Connor Rowe (Texas).
Brewster was led offensively by Connor Powers (Mississippi State) who went 2 for 4 with 2 rbi; including a double in the first inning that jump started the Whitecaps. Brandon Workman (Texas) started for the Gatemen and went 7.1 innings, allowing 4 earned runs and striking out 7 to add to his lead leaguing 25 strikeouts. Workman handed the ball over the Matt Bashore (Indiana) and then Chris Hicks (Georgia Tech). The tying run in the 9th was charged to Bashore and Hicks held the game at a tie with a strikeout and a groundout that proved to be the final out of the game.
The Gatemen offense produced 11 hits and 4 players had 2 hits apiece. In addition to Liddle’s great night at the plate, Ryan Pineda (Cal-State Northridge) continued his hot hitting along with Brett Eibner (Arkansas) and Connor Rowe (Texas).
Wareham (4-8-1) will play next at home vs. the Bourne Braves on Tuesday and then welcome Falmouth to Spillane Field on Wednesday night.
