CHATHAM, MA: – Four Gatemen errors led to 3 Chatham runs as the Anglers took Game 1 of the scheduled 7-inning double-header at Veterans Field 5-2. Wareham has now lost 2 straight and drops to 4-9 on the season.
The Gatemen started off the game quickly as George Springer (UCONN) hit is team leading and league tying 3rd homerun of the season to give Wareham a 1-0 lead after 1 inning. Gatemen starting pitcher Jack Armstrong (Vanderbilt) protected that lead through the first 2 innings; not allowing a hit and allowing only 1 base runner. The wheels fell off in the 3rd inning.
Mark Ginther (Oklahoma State) led off the inning with a double down the 3rd base line that hopped over thirdbaseman Tyler Bream’s glove. A Jack Armstrong throwing error on a sacrafic bunt attempt gave Chatham runners at first and second with no outs. Angler’s leadoff hitter Brian Humphries (Pepperdine) tied the game 1-1 with an infield hit before a Stephen Perez (Miami) sacrafic attempt was thrown into left field by Armstrong on an attempt force out at third base. Chatham’s lead was 2-1 and they would never look back.
The third inning continued to get worse for the Gatemen when an Armstrong wild pitch plated Humphries. The final run of the inning was scored on a Joe Pavone (UCONN) sacrafic fly to centerfield and the Anglers led the Gatemen 4-1 after the third inning finally ended.
After a scoreless 4th inning, Wareham cut the lead in half when George Springer knocked in Anthony Toth (Michigan) with an rbi single in the top of the 5th. However, Chatham answered right back in the bottom half of the inning but without Wareham’s help once again. A Joe Pavone single was mis-handle by Gatemen OF Alex Dickerson (Indiana); allowing Rick Oropesa (USC) to scamper home with Chatham’s 5th and final run.
Devin Burke (Duke) pitching a perfect inning of relief in the 6th but the Gatemen went down 1-2-3 in the 7th and final inning of game 1 of the schedule double-header between Wareham and Chatham at Veterans Field in Chatham, MA.
Jack Armstrong (1-1) takes the loss for Wareham and Derek Self (Louisville) was the winning pitcher for the Anglers. The Gatemen drop to 4-9 on the season and Chatham improves to 8-4-1.
