07/13/08 – Red Sox Too Much For Gatemen
The Yarmouth Dennis Red Sox scored 4 runs in the second inning and never looked back as they went on the defeat the Wareham Gatemen 7-2 on “autograph night” in front of 1,012 at Spillane Field. The Red Sox scored their 4 runs on 4 hits and 1 error; including an rbi single by Whit Merrifield (South Carolina), Nick LIles (West Carolina) and an rbi triple by Josh Rutledge (Alabama). The other run of the inning was scored on a fielding error by Gatemen starting pitcher Matt Bashore (Indiana); one of three errors committed by the Wareham defense.
First baseman Aaron Baker (Oklahoma) would get one run back for the Gatemen with a solo homerun in the bottom of the second inning but that is as close as Wareham would come to Y-D. Bashore, making his first start for the Gatemen, went 4 innings, allowed 2 earned and 5 runs total, striking out an impressive 7 batters and giving up 5 hits.

Nick Liles, having one of the best offensive seasons on the Cape in ’08, went 4 for 5 with 2 rbi for the Red Sox. He is now hitting .400 on the season to go along with 36 hits and 18 rbi. He stole his 10th base of the season; which leads the CCBL. Wareham managed only 6 hits on the night; including the Baker homerun and 2 hits by Connor Rowe (Texas). Jimmy Saris (Georgetown) relieved Bashore and was impressive by going 3 innings, allowing only two hits and not allowing a run.

The Gatemen and the entire Cape Cod Baseball League will enjoy an off-day on Monday. Wareham returns to the field on Tuesday and it does not get any easier as the Gatemen will welcome Western Division Leading and overall CCBL point leader Hyannis to Spillane Field at 7:00pm. Max Perlman (Harvard) will make the start for Wareham.
