Preview: Wareham seeks to end regular season on high note as Freeman, Shaver chase leaderboards

Wareham (24-15-4) vs. Cotuit (15-27-1)

Probable Starting Pitchers: WAREHAM – Clayton Gelfand (0-1, 9.94 ERA), RHP; COTUIT– TBA

Preview: At least as the last regular season game springs upon these two teams, they both go into it knowing where they stand. Regardless of the outcome on Wednesday, Wareham will receive the number two seed in the Western Division and host Bourne in the first round of the Cape Cod Baseball League playoffs beginning on Friday. Cotuit, meanwhile, due to a 6-1 loss at Yarmouth-Dennis yesterday, has been eliminated from playoff contention and as a result will be playing in their final game of the summer on Wednesday evening. The Gatemen upped their regular season win total to 24 last night with a 3-1 win over Bourne, making it their highest win total since 2006. Clayton Gelfand, looking to send Wareham into the playoffs on a high note, makes his second start of the year. Gelfand was much sharper in his first start against Falmouth than he had been coming out of the bullpen. In that start back on July 29, Gelfand went five innings, surrendered two earned runs on five hits, walked two and struck out a batter.

The Kettleers saw their postseason dreams come to a close on Tuesday after a late season charge brought them within just three points of Hyannis for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Western Division. Regardless, Cotuit has proven to be a team that gives the Gatemen trouble at Lowell Park. In their two matchups there so far this season, Cotuit is 1-0-1 including a bottom of the ninth comeback that saw the Kettleers rally for a run off Wareham closer Ryan Wilson. Quinn Brodey out of Stanford has emerged as a budding star, hitting .336 this Cape league season, good enough for third in the league.

News & Notes:

. Cole Freeman sits atop the leaderboards in batting average (.374), 21 points ahead of Ernie Clement (.353). If Freeman were not to take an at-bat today, Clement would have to go six-for-six to pass Freeman.

. Wareham coach Jerry Weinstein announced his postseason defensive alignment prior to the Gatemen’s game against Bourne yesterday. Colton Shaver will be the starting third baseman, with Robbie Metz, Joey Bartosic, and Jonathan Pryor going left to right in the outfield. Adrian Tovalin is expected to man the desingnated hitter’s spot in the batting order.

. Colton Shaver heads into Wednesday with the league lead in home runs (8) and RBIs (29). Austin Filiere of Harwich is right behind him, with seven home runs and 27 RBIs.
