Wareham (15-14-3) vs. Bourne (14-15-2)
Probable Starting Pitchers: WAREHAM – Ryan Wilson (1-0, 1.20 ERA), LHP; BOURNE – TBA
Preview: What a difference a week can make. Just last Wednesday, the Gatemen saw themselves get trounced, 12-3, at the hands of Falmouth, to drop their fifth game in seven days. Since then, however, Wareham is 3-1 in its last four, grabbing a win over Bourne, and eking one run wins over East Division powers Harwich and Orleans. The recent stretch has catapulted the Gatemen back into second place in the West Division. On Wednesday evening, Wareham looks to stretch their lead for second over Bourne by five points when they travel to Doran Park to take on the Braves. So far this season, the Gatemen have had more than their fair share of success against the Braves, going 3-0-1 in their four matchups to date. Ryan Wilson, a left-hander out of Pepperdine University, gets the start for Wareham – his first of the season. Wilson has typically come out of the Gatemen bullpen, usually as a closer, but on Wednesday will be asked to give Wareham a few more innings of work. His last outing came back on July 15 versus the Braves, where he went two innings and gave up no earned runs on two hits. On the season, Wilson is 1-0 with a 1.20 ERA, striking out 15 in 15 innings and scattering 15 hits.
The Braves, meanwhile, have been in a bit of a rut ever since the Gatemen swept them in a home-and-home series back on July 3 and July 4. Over their last 11 games, Bourne is 3-7-1, and most recently blew a 6-0 lead against Brewster on July 17. Without a doubt the most troubling aspect of the Braves’ play over the last two weeks has been their lack of extra base power at the plate. Bourne currently ranks ninth out of 10 teams on the Cape in doubles, and last in home runs (7).
News & Notes:
. Gatemen slugger Colton Shaver has taken over the Cape Cod Baseball League lead in home runs (6) and RBIs (24)
. Bourne’s Justin Yurchak leads the League in batting average sitting at .362
. Wareham’s Joey Bartosic (15), Robbie Metz (13), and Cole Freeman (10) all rank in the top four in the League in stolen bases
