Preview: Gatemen look to trip up red hot Mariners

Harwich (19-10) vs. Wareham (14-14-3)

Probable Starting Pitchers: HARWICH – Peter Solomon (0-0, 0.80 ERA), RHP; WAREHAM – Jeff Bain (0-2, 6.30 ERA), RHP

Preview: After a tough seven game stretch that saw Wareham go 0-5-2, the Gatemen appear to have righted the ship. Winners of two of their last three, Wareham has seen its pitching staff give up just eight runs over the last 28 innings of play. On Monday, the Gatemen face a much taller task when they take on the team with the best record in the Cape Cod Baseball League, the Harwich Mariners. Harwich has exploded over their past two games, scoring 23 combined runs against Orleans, and East Division rival Yarmouth-Dennis. Despite the Mariners’ overall success this season, however, the Gatemen are 1-0-1 versus the East Division power, limiting Harwich to three runs in both contests. Jeff Bain gets the start for the Gatemen, looing to bounce back from a rough outing this past Tuesday at Hyannis, where he let up six runs over four innings of work. On the year, Bain is 0-2 with a 6.30 ERA, giving up 20 hits in 12 innings.

The Gatemen offense squares up against a familiar foe when they face off against Mariners’ starter Peter Solomon. Solomon opposed Wareham back on June 16, going six innings, surrendering two runs on four hits, walking no one and striking out nine. All in all, it has been a terrific season for Solomon regardless of the fact tonight will be just his third start for the Mariners. The rising junior out of Notre Dame is 0-0, with an ERA of 0.80, striking out 21 in 22.2 innings and walking only six. He has a fastball that sits in the low-to-mid 90s, a slider, and a change-up.

News & Notes:

. Mariners’ Ernie Clement (.361) and Joseph Dunand (.337) are both in the top four in the league in batting average

. Harwich’s Teddy Rodliff is second in the Cape Cod Baseball League in wins with three

. Despite just having one RBI over the last week, Wareham’s Colton Shaver still leads the league in RBIs with 22
