Preview: Gatemen look to take season series from Orleans

Orleans (19-21) vs. Wareham (22-15-4)

Probable Starting Pitchers: ORLEANS – Joe Ryan (2-1, 1.70 ERA), RHP; WAREHAM– Jeff Bain (0-2, 5.70 ERA), RHP

Preview: While the Gatemen were unable to come away from last night’s contest versus Yarmouth-Dennis with a win, the 4-4 tie earned them one point, enough to clinch the number two seed in the Western Division. Now, with their place in the standings locked up and a first round matchup against Bourne all but inevitable, the Gatemen have stated they are simply focused on making sure they are not, ‘backing into the playoffs.’ On Monday, they hope to begin a strong end to the regular season when they host Orleans for the second and final time this year. Wareham has taken on the Firebirds three times in total so far, going 2-1 and losing their only matchup of the year back on June 15 when Orleans scored seven, two out runs in the bottom of the eighth to win, 11-7. Jeff Bain tries to build off his previous start when he makes his sixth start of the year for Wareham. Bain has followed up a horrendous start at Hyannis with two quality outings, combing to give up five earned runs in those two starts. Against the leagues top offense in Brewster his last time out, Bain gave up three runs in five innings of work, but did all those came in the first inning. On the season, Bain is 0-2 with a 5.70 ERA, surrendering 34 hits in 30 innings, walking seven and striking out 18.

The last time these two teams met Joe Ryan got the start for Orleans and sure enough this time around the Gatemen will see Ryan once again. Ryan, who overall has been a top of the line like starter for Orleans, struggled mightily in his last start at Harwich, going just 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and giving out two free passes. Still, Ryan, a rising junior out of Cal State Northridge, has been lights outs for most of this Cape Cod Baseball League season, pitching to the tune of a 1.70 ERA and striking out 28 in 31.2 innings.
