Preview: Gatemen look to inch closer to playoff spot

Chatham (13-19) vs. Wareham (16-14-3)

Probable Starting Pitchers: CHATHAM – TBA; WAREHAM – Hogan Harris (1-0, 1.68 ERA), LHP

Preview: Once again, the Gatemen found themselves on the winning end of a one run ball game last night, as they squeaked by Bourne, 3-2, to win their 12th one run game of the season. Including the three games in which the Gatemen have tied, that is now 19 games where Wareham has either played a one run contest or come up even with their opponent. Over those 19 games, the Gatemen are now 12-4-3, a sign they may be a team built for a deep playoff run. Hogan Harris hopes to keep Wareham’s good times rolling when he gets the start for Wareham, his third of the season. The left-hander has four outings total this summer and in all four Harris has come off awfully impressive. He is 1-0 with a 1.68 ERA, striking out 14 in 10.2 innings, scattering just seven hits and walking only two. Harris’ most recent appearance came back on July 15 against Bourne where he went 2.1 innings, let up one run on three hits, and struck out five.

Chatham comes into Thursday’s challenge at Spillane Field fighting for their playoff lives. Following a stretch that saw them lose five in a row, the Anglers have clawed their way back into the picture, picking up a key win over East Division rival Brewster, and a one run win over Cotuit. All season long, the Anglers have been bitten by a poor defense, as they enter Thursday’s game with the worst fielding percentage in the League (0.961) as well as the most errors (50). Still, the Anglers have managed to play the Gatemen tough in each of their three meetings this season, going 2-1, with their only loss to Wareham coming by a score of 1-0.

News & Notes:

. The Gatemen’s magic number to clinch a playoff spot is six (6) the earliest they can clinch is Sunday against Cotuit

. Wareham’s Joey Bartosic increased his league-leading total in stolen bases up to 16 last night
