Preview: Gatemen look to continue season long success against Harwich

Harwich (24-13-2) vs. Wareham (21-15-3)

Probable Starting Pitchers: HARWICH – Shane McCarthy (1-1, 2.04 ERA), RHP; WAREHAM – Brett Conine (1-1, 4.59 ERA), RHP

Preview: The Gatemen saw their eight game winning streak come to an end last night, as despite putting the tying run on third with one out in the top of the ninth, Falmouth closer Corbin Martin was able to induce a strikeout and a lineout to end the game. Wareham will have little time to lull on the loss however, as Eastern Division leading Harwich comes to town seeking their first win against Wareham this season. For all their turbulent streaks at times, the Gatemen have found consistent success against the Mariners, going 2-0-1 versus the East power. On the mound for the Gatemen is Brett Conine who is hoping to bounce back from his first rough outing of the season. Conine last appeared on July 22 against Yarmouth-Dennis and surrendered five runs over five innings, walked two, and struck out five. He has faced the Mariners once so far this season back on July 9 where he went five innings, let up three runs on nine hits, and walked no one.

Sean McCarthy will face the Gatemen’s lineup for the first time this season as he makes his seventh start for the Mariners. The right-hander out of Seton Hall has had an overall solid year, but his last start was arguably his worst. Against Yarmouth-Dennis back on July 17, McCarthy went 4.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits, and allowed two free passes. On the year, the rising junior is 1-1 with a 2.04 ERA, striking out 23 in 35.1 innings. He features a fastball that sits in the low 90s, to go with a curveball.

News & Notes:

. McCarthy, Harwich’s starter, threw the first perfect game in Seton Hall history back on April 16

. The Gatemen’s magic number to clinch home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs currently sits at two

. Wareham’s Cole Freeman still leads the league in hitting (.374), but Harwich’s Ernie Clement (.355) and Joe Dunand (.342) sit second and third, respectively
