Preview: Conine given task to cool down top team in the League

Yarmouth-Dennis (22-12) vs. Wareham (17-14-3)

Probable Starting Pitchers: YARMOUTH-DENNIS – Erich Uelmen (2-0, 3.48 ERA), RHP; WAREHAM – Brett Conine (0-1, 3.75 ERA), RHP

Preview: For a Wareham Gatemen team that is eager to prove they are a top contender to win the Cape Cod Baseball League Title, Friday is sure to provide the ultimate test. Tonight, the Gatemen welcome the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox to Spillane Field, and ever since starting 0-5, the Red Sox have been without a doubt the top team in the League. Over their last 29 games, Yarmouth-Dennis is 22-7, and more recently winners of seven of their last eight. Wareham, for their part, has won four in a row, helping create separation between them and third place Hyannis. Brett Conine hopes to cool down the red hot Red Sox, as he makes his seventh start for the Gatemen. Conine has seen steady improvement in each of his outings, mixing in a disappearing change-up to go along with his four-seam fastball that ranges between 89-91. Against Brewster, the top offense on the Cape statistically, on July 16, Conine allowed just two runs on one lone single through 5.1 innings. On the year, Conine is 0-1 with a 3.75 ERA, giving up 24 hits in 26.1 innings, striking out 20 compared to eight walks.

Eric Uelmen, a right-hander out of Cal Poly, will get his fifth start for the Red Sox on Friday evening. Uelmen has opposed the Gatemen once this season. That outing took place back on June 24, a 12-4 Yarmouth-Dennis win. In that start, Uelmen went five shutout innings, scattering one hit, walking only one, and striking out five. The rising junior has faced his fair share of struggles more recently, however. Over the course of his last eight innings of work spanning two starts, Uelmen has allowed eight runs on 11 hits. He features a fastball that hovers around 93-94 miles per hour as well as a 12-6 curveball.
