06/28/08 – Pineda Powers Gatemen Past Mariners in 10 Innings
Third Basemen Ryan Pineda’s (Cal-State Northridge) 10th inning, rbi single plated the winning run in walk-off fashion as the Wareham Gatemen defeated the Harwich Mariners 3-2. Having already tied the game with a lead-off homer in the 6th inning, Pineda’s single in the 10th inning drove home Buddy Munroe (Florida) who had singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a bunt by SS Jake Lemmerman (Duke) and to third on a ground out by 2B Raynor Cambell (Baylor).
Pineda’s offensive performance was matched by a tremendous pitching effort by starter Max Perlman (Harvard) and relief pitcher Zach Brewster (Georgia Tech). Perlman went 6 innings, allowed only 2 runs and struck out 5. Brewster pitched 3 and 2/3 innings and was awarded the win by not allowing a run or a hit in his relief effort.
The Gatemen scored in the first inning for an early lead that was highlighted by a Brett Eibner (Arkansas) triple. He scored when Kipp Shutz (Indiana) singled to give Wareham a 1-0 lead. Harwich came right back in the 2nd to score one run and then took the lead in the 6th off of an rbi single by JT Wise (Oklahoma) before Pineda’s homer in the bottom half of the inning.
The Gatemen will look to make it three in a row this afternoon at 5:00 when they take on the Eastern Division leading Brewster Whitecaps in Brewster. Brandon Workman (Texas) will start for the Gatemen and he will be matched up against Caleb Colthem (Vanderbilt).
