One Strike From Win – Gatemen Drop Series Opener to Falmouth in 10

WAREHAM, MA:   Jake Boyd (Stetson), making only his 2nd Cape League start after signing with the Gatemen just 11 days ago, shutout Falmouth for 8 innings before the Commodores tied it off of the Wareham bullpen in the 9th and then scored the winning runs in the 10th to take game 1 of the CCBL Western Division Finals.

Boyd, a relief pitcher all year at Stetson and in the Northwoods Summer Collegiate League earlier this summer, strike out 6 and allowed only 4 hits over his 8 shutout innings.  Falmouth starter Sean Hagan (St John’s) was also terrific going 5 innings, not allowing a run and striking out 3.

Not until Hagan left the game did the Wareham offense produce a run.  Johnny Field (Arizona) delivered an rbi single in the 6th inning to give Wareham a 1-0 lead and what looked to be the winning run.

Wareham held onto that lead until the 9th inning and turned the game over the Konner Wade (Arizona).  Wade, who finished 2nd on the all-time, single season list for saves in a season for Wareham put two runners on base but managed to work his way to a 2 out, 2 strike situation.  Looking to close out the game with a strike, Jared King (Kansas State) delivered a clutch, 2 out, 2 strike single; tying the game 1-1 in the top of the 9th.

In the 10th inning after the Gatemen were sat down in order, Falmouth loaded the bases off of Gatemen pitcher Dillon Newman (Baylor).  An infield error by Mott Hyde (Georgia Tech) allow 2 runs to score and the Commdores took a 3-1 lead. Falmouth added another run and went on to win 4-1 and take a 1-0 series lead.

It was a slow night offensively for both teams but Falmouth Reid Redman (Texas Tech) has 3 hits and an rbi.  For Wareham, Johnny Field  and LJ Mazzilli (UCONN) had 2 hits apiece.

Game 2 of the CCBL Western Division, best-of-3 finals is on Thursday night at 7:00pm in Falmouth at Arnie Allen Diamond at Guv Fuller Field.
