Offensive Woes on the Road Resurface in 4-2 Loss

ORLEANS, Mass.  After scoring 15 combined runs in their last two games, the Wareham offense was once again stifled on the road, managing only three hits against Orleans in a 4-2 loss.

This was the third time this season (after a 5-1 loss at Bourne and 5-0 loss at Falmouth) that the Gatemen (6-5-1) managed three hits or fewer away from the much friendlier confines of Spillane Field.

At home, the Gatemen are 6-1, but after five road contests in 2009, the squad has managed an 0-4-1 record in opponents’ stadiums.

Brett Eibner (Arkansas) was a rare bright spot on the offensive end for Wareham, taking the Firebirds’ starter Cole Cook (Pepperdine) deep to right center in the top of the fifth for his second home run in as many games.   The blast made it 1-0 Gatemen and tied Eibner with Derek Dietrich (Georgia Tech) and Shea Vucinich (Washington State) for the team lead at two homers.

Orleans (7-7) got to Wareham starter Matt Barnes in their half of the fifth, as Gary Brown (Cal State Fullerton) hit a two-out, two-run single to put the Firebirds up 2-1.  Barnes (0-1) took the loss for Wareham, though he pitched adequately, giving up two runs on two hits in five innings, while striking out four against three walks.

Orleans tacked on a run in the sixth and seventh innings to extend their lead to 4-1.  Wareham closed the gap in the top of the ninth as Alex Dickerson (Indiana) singled home Ryan Pineda (Cal State Northridge), who reached on a walk and took second base on defensive indifference.

Wareham will not have to wait long for another shot at the Firebirds, as they return to Spillane Field for a contest against Orleans Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.  Join broadcasters Alex Perlman and Kevin Copp for the Gatemen pregame show at 6:45.
