Offense on Display at McKeon Park: Gatemen 10 Hyannis 3

HYANNIS, MA.    Led by George Springer’s (UCONN) 4 rbi night; including a 3-run homer, the Wareham Gatemen defeated the Hyannis Mets 10-3; sweeping this division rival 6-0 for the season.  Supported by a 7 inning starting pitching performance by Blake Monar (Indiana) who struck out 6, scattered 6 hits and allowed only 2 runs, the Gatemen walked away with a well-rounded game and more importantly, a key late season victory.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning.  Visiting Wareham struck first.  Derek Dietrich (Georgia Tech) doubled and advanced to third base on a ground out by Connor Rowe (Texas).  George Springer (UCONN) then hit a shot off the third basemen and that error allowed Dietrich to score and give Wareham a 1-0 lead.  Hyannis tied the game in the home half of the inning when Ryan Cuneo (Delaware) singled to drive in the Mets’ first run.

Wareham would score runs in each of the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings.  In the 3rd, George Springer singled home Jordan Swagerty (Arizona State) and put Wareham ahead 2-1.  Alex Dickerson (Indiana) homered to lead off the 4th inning and his 2nd shot of the season gave the Gatemen a 3-1 cushion.

Springer was front and center again in the fifth inning.  Derek Dietrich walked and advance to 2nd on a Connor Rowe bunt single; giving Wareham runners at 1st and 2nd with no outs and setting the stage for the Big East Freshman of the Year.  After a called strike after attempting a bunt, Springer hit a long, opposite field 3-run homer into right field; giving the Gatemen a 6-1 lead.  The Mets got 2 back in the bottom half of the inning before Zach Wilson’s (Arizona State) rbi single in the 7th gave Wareham a 7-3 lead.

Wareham added a run in the 8th and added 2 more in the 9th; highlighted by Alex Dickerson’s 3rd triple of the year followed by Jake Lemmerman’s (Duke) rbi single.  The final run was produced by Shea Vucinich (Washington State) who doubled home Lemmerman; giving the Gatemen their 10th run.

Matt Barnes (UCONN) closed out the game for Wareham in the 9th and the Gatemen won 10-3 in front of 1,799 at McKeon Park in Hyannis.  The Gatemen swept the season series with the Mets and remain one point behind division leading Bourne who defeated Cotuit 13-1.

Wareham and the entire league have an off day on Thursday as the CCBL All-Stars will be honored prior the Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park.  The Gatemen return to action on Friday at Cotuit in a key Western Division game vs. the Kettleers who are only 2 points behind Wareham.  Eric Pfisterer (Duke) is the scheduled starting pitcher.
