ORLEANS, MA. A Shea Vucinich (Washington State) rbi-single in the of the ninth inning caps a Wareham Gatemen come from behind victory as they defeat the Orleans Firebirds 2-1 at Eldredge Park. Trailing 1-0 going into the final inning, the Gatemen staged a come from behind win to solidify their lead in the CCBL Western Division.
The Gatemen got things going in the 9th when Jordan Swagerty (Arizona State) singled and advance to 2nd base on a wild pitch. After advancing to third on a ground out by Jake Lemmerman (Duke), Swagerty scored on a Chris Hannick(Cal State Northridge) rbi single to tie the game with the Firebirds 1-1. After loading the bases, Vucinich came through with a clutch rbi single to give Wareham a 2-1 lead and eventual win over the Eastern Division Firebirds.
Both teams benefited from solid pitching on the night. Four Gatemen pitchers combined for allowing only 1 run, 3 hits and 10 strikeouts. Brett Eibner (Arkansas) got the start but came out to the game after 2 innings but Bruce Kern (St. John’s) pitched 4 shutout innings of relief to keep the Gatemen in the game. Matt Barnes (UCONN) and Josh Slaats (Hawaii) closed out the game. Slaats was credited with the win.
Wareham’s record improves to 16-13-4 and the will play next tomorrow in a double-header vs. Cotuit at Spillane Field that will begin at 4:30. Cole Green (Texas) and Josh Mueller (Eastern Illinois) will get the starts respectively.
