2012 CCBL PLAYOFFS- CAPE COD LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS BEST-OF-3 SERIES WAREHAM VS. YD (Wareham wins series 2-0) August 18th UPDATE
THANK YOU CAPE LEAGUE FANS - The CCBL Championship series drew a cumulative attendence of 10,245!!
HOMERUN EXPLOSION CONTINUES INTO PLAYOFFS - 2012 was a record breaking homerun season on the Cape with the Harwich Mariners breaking the CCBL team record and Wareham's Tyler Horan (Virginia Tech) breaking the league's wood bat HR record. That trend continued into the playoffs as Wareham's 15 HR's were the most by a team going back as far as 2000 & perhaps beyond. (records were compared going bact to 2000) YD's Robert Pehl (Washington) hit 4 homers which is more than any single player going back to that same time period.
CHAMPIONSHIP PICTURES - Check back to the website as our official photographer Andrew Griffith has lots of photos from last night's game and we'll get them onto the site as soon as possible.
CAPE COD LEAGUE OVERALL TITLES - Going back all the way to 1946, the Cotuit Kettleers have won the most CCBL Championships with 15 (last being in 2010), Orleans follows with 10 (2005) & Wareham (2012) & Falmouth (1980) are tied with 7 each. Since Wareham's first title in 1976, Cotuit & Wareham are tied with 7 titles each in that time span; making the Kettleers or the Gatemen the winner in 14 out of the past 37 years.
COOPER FARRIS HOLD RECORD FOR GATEMEN CHAMPIONSHIP - Cooper Farris won CCBL Championships in his first two seasons on Cape Cod when his Gatemen teams won back to back titles in 2001 & 2002. This third title this year give him more championships than any previous Gatemen manager. Legendary CCBL Hall of Famer Don Reed won 4 titles overall - 2 with Wareham & two with YD. Farris is now tied with YD Head Coach Scott Pickler who won titles with the Red Sox in 2004, 2006 & 2007.
PLAYOFF MVP TO KYLE SCHWARBER - Kyle Schwarber (Indiana) accepted the playoff MVP as part of the postgame celebration at Red Wilson field last night. Previous playoff MVP's won by the Gatemen were Mo Vaughn (Seton Hall -1988), John Thoden (UNC - 1989), Chris Boni (Rice - 1994), Kevin Hodge (Blinn JC - 1997), Aaron Hill (LSU - 2001) & Matt Kutler (Brown - 2002)
TEAM AWARDS HANDED OUT AFTER GAME 3 - After the team collected the Arnold Mycock trophy and Kyle Schwarber his playoff MVP, the Gatemen organization handed out their team awards. The Francis Tripp Award that is given to the player that makes the biggest impact on the community both on and off the field was given to Kendall Graveman (Mississippi State). The Albert Bigelow Award that is given to the team's top pitcher was awarded to Colby Suggs (Arkansas) and the team's top positional player was Tyler Horan (Virginia Tech). He took home the Sylvia Bigelow Award.
BIG 50/50 RAFFLE PRIZE AT RED WILSON FIELD - With over 4,000 in attendance, it was not surprise to learn that a lucky fan went home with a 50/50 raffle prize of $1,502.
2012 CCBL PLAYOFFS- CAPE COD LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS BEST-OF-3 SERIES WAREHAM VS. YD (Game 1) August 16th UPDATE
GAME 2 STARTING PITCHERS - The starting pitchers have been annoucned for tonight's game 2 and it will be Wareham's Barrett Astin (Arkansas) facing YD Red Sox pitcher Aaron Blair (Marshall)
PLAYOFF LEADERS - The Gatemen veterans, playing their 2nd year on the Cape, are making use of that experience in making their 2nd CCBL Playoff appearance. Daniel Palka (Georgia Tech) & Ty Ross (LSU) are tied for the playoff lead with 2 homers each and they are 2nd & 3rd respectively with 9 & 8 rbi.
GATEMEN BULLPEN LIGHTS OUT - The Wareham Gatemen bullpen has been outstanding all season but has been flat out dominant in the post season. There was a lot of talk at the ballpark & on social media last night scouts & media alike saying that Colby Suggs (Arkansas) was "unhittable" in closing out the game last night vs YD. He has 2 saves this postseason & has struck out 9 in 4.1 innings of work. Nick Rumbelow (LSU) has pitched 4 perfect innings of relielf and has struck out 9 of the 12 batters he has faced. Jonathan Holder (Mississippi State) has also been perfect in 3 relief appearance; picking up 2 wins and striking out 5 in 3 innings of work.
ARRIVE EARLY TONIGHT - Win, lose or otherwise, tonight will mark the final game at Spillane Field for the 2012 Wareham Gatemen & a big crowd is expected. Arrive early to find parking & your favorite spot to enjoy what could be a memorable evening in Gatemen history.

GATMEN FACING TOUGH PITCHER TONIGHT - The Gatemen are facing one of the top pitchers in the Cape League tonight when the Red Sox trot out Aaron Blair (Marshall) to the hill. Blair finished the season with the league's top era at 1.17 and had a 6-0 record on the season. He was a member of the East All-Star team and defeated Chatham in the opening round of the playoffs. Blair faced Wareham and picked up the win in 10-2 YD win on July 5th in a matchup, ironically, that he opposed Barrett Astin, who was the starter that day for Wareham and whom he will face again in game 2 tonight.
WAREHAM STREAK REACHES 9 GAMES - The Gatemen current winning streak, the includes the last 4 regular season games, sweeps over Falmouth & Bourne and now the game 1 win in the CCBL finals has now reached 9 games.

(Series Preview) August 15th
GAME 1 STARTING PITCHER - The Wareham Gatemen will send Kendall Graveman (Mississippi State) to the mound to start game 1 as he did in the opening series vs Falmouth. YD will counter with RHP Andrew Thurman (Cal-Irvine). Thurman pitched 5 inning vs Wareham on June 23rd in 12-1 YD win. Graveman pitched just 1 inning of relief vs YD this year on August 2nd.
CCBL CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY - The Wareham Gatemen are looking to win their 7th CCBL Championship & first since back to back titles in 2001 & 2002. This will be Wareham's 12th appearance in the finals in the past 36 years; once for every 3 years since 1976. The Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox have been one of the premier franchises in recent years; having won titles in 2004, 2006 & 2007. They have won 5 total championships and have made the championship series a total of 8 times.
GATEMEN - RED SOX PLAYOFF HISTORY - The Gatemen and Red Sox have only met in the playoffs twice - both in the finals. YD defeated Wareham in best of 3 series both times; in 1990 & 2006 2 games to 1.
HEAD TO HEAD MATCHUP - The Gatemen were 0-4 vs Y-D this season and are just 2-6 against the Red Sox the past two season. The regular season matchup since 1981 is virtually equal with the Gatemen holding a slight 71-67-4.
LEAGUE RECORDS SINCE 1981 - The Gatemen have the best cumulative record and the most wins in the league since 1981 with a record of 743-611-36. YD has record of 674-665-49.
NO LIGHTS AT RED WILSON FIELD - The Red Sox home field in Yarmouth is one of 3 CCBL franchsies that do not have lights (Cotuit & Brewster being the other two). As a result, game 1 and game 3 (if necessary) will be played at 4:00pm. If you are planning on heading to a potential game 3, that will be on Friday afternoon, please make time for the expected weekend traffic heading over the bridges.
TEAM MATCH UP WITH ALL-STARS - The All-Star selection committee got it right in terms of selecting the most players from the teams that ended meeting in the CCBL Championship. The Red Sox and Gatemen each had 7 players selected to play in the game. YD had 6 positional All-Stars selected to start in that game including Zak Blair, Alex Blandino, Sam Travis, Tanner Mathis, Robert Pehl and Aaron Blair. Infield Carlos Asuajae was named as a reserve. The Gatemen sent starters Daniel Palka, Tyler Horan & Mott Hyde to the All-Star game and they were joined by 3 members of the stellar Gatemen bullpen that included Colby Suggs, Nick Rumbelow and Konner Wade as well as catcher Ty Ross. (Konner Wade has since left the Cape to rest a tired arm)
LIVE AUDIO BROADCAST ON THE AIR AT 3:45 - The Gatemen broadcast team will be live on the air with a live radio broadcast starting at 3:45 with the Gatemen pregame show. Click over to out pressbox page to enjoy the broadcast. If you can't make it home in time to listen, you can download the UStream mobile application and listen to the game on your smartphone.

GATEMEN "SEC" BULLPEN SOLID - Trio of Nick Rumbelow (LSU), Jonathan Holder (Mississippi State) and Colby Suggs (Arkanas) - are going to make it hard to beat Wareham late in games. The 3 hard throwing right-handers from the SEC pitched a perfect 7th, 8th & 9th inning tonight vs Bourne in game 1.
SEVEN STRAIGHT WINS - Including the 4 game winning streak to close out the regular season, the Gatemen have now won 7 straight times which is the longest winning streak in recent memory for the Gatemen. The Gatemen have won 5 straight playoff games in the past 3 seasons vs the Braves.

2012 CCBL PLAYOFFS - WESTERN DIVISION FINALS BEST-OF-3 SERIES WAREHAM VS. BOURNE (Series Preview) August 12th
HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE FOR GATEMEN - For the second consecutive series, the Gatemen will hold home field advantage. The Gatemen are #2 seed in the West while Bourne is the #4 seed. The Gatemen, however, finished only 7-15 at Spillane this season and the Braves were a 6-16 road team.
SEASON SERIES - The Gatemen won the season series with the Braves 5-1. Wareham is now 75-50-6 all-time vs Bourne in the regular season. Bourne, along with Brewster in 1988, were that last two franchises to enter the Cape Cod League.
GATEMEN/BRAVES PLAYOFF HEAD-TO-HEAD PLAYOFF HISTORY - The Wareham Gatemen & Bourne Braves have met 5 times in the CCBL Playoffs. Wareham has won each series - 1997, 1998, 2001, 2010 and last year in 2011. The '97, 98' & '01 series were all Western Division Finals matchups.
FAMILILAR FACE ON THE OTHER SIDE - Bourne 2nd baseman LJ Mazzilli (UCONN) played 2010 & 2011 for the Wareham Gatemen. Mazzilli signed late this season with Bourne after not reaching a deal with the Minnesota Twins who drafted him in June. Mazzilli hit a walk-off double in game 2 of the West Division Semi-Finals to eliminate Bourne in 2010. Now he is shining for the Braves in the 2012 playoffs - as he had 6 rbi in their opening win over Cotuit & hit what turned out to the game winning 3 run homer in the clinching game earlier today.
WEST DIVISION FINALS RECENT HISTORY - The Wareham Gatemen have reached the CCBL West Division Finals for the 6th time since 2001 and in that stretch are 3-2; winning the CCBL Champion in both 2001 & 2002 and losing to YD in the Championship Series in 2006. The Gatemen lost to Cotuit in 2010 & to Falmouth in 2011. Bourne last made the Division Finals in 2009 when they eventually won the Cape Cod Baseball League Championship.
HOW DO THEY MATCH-UP? - Wareham enters the game as the hottest team in the league, having won their last 4 regular season games and first 2 playoff games - overtaking Falmouth on the last day of the season for the #2 seed. Perhaps the most explosive offensive in the league, the Gatemen hit 51 homers as a team - only 2nd behind record breaking Harwich and hit a league 3rd best .265. The pitching staff finished with a 7th best 4.51 era.
Bourne hit .262 as a team; finishing just behind the Gatemen and hit 34 rbi. The teams enter the series having stole the least amount of bases in the league. The Braves finished 8th in team era; just behind Wareham with a 4.52 era.
CCBL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP - For a full rundown of the CCBL playoff scores and schedules, they are all posted to our schedule page so be sure to check it out.
READ THIS MORNING'S NOTES - We posted notes following the game 2 win vs Falmouth below...so be sure to check thoe out as well.

|
2012 CCBL PLAYOFFS - WESTERN DIVISION FINALS BEST-OF-3 SERIES WAREHAM VS. FALMOUTH (Wareham wins series 2-0) August 12th
PLAYOFF SCHEDULE/SCENARIOS - The Gatemen await the winner of the #1 seed Cotuit Kettleers & the #4 seed Bourne Braves who will playing a deciding game 3 this afternoon in Cotuit. A Kettleers win means Wareham would play Monday afternoon in game 1 of the West Division Finals. A Braves' win gives the Gatemen home field advantage in the finals and game 1 would be Monday night at 7:00pm at Spillane Field.
PALKA PLAYOFF EXPERIENCE - Daniel Palka's 5 rbi in game two now give him a two year playoff total of 8 while hitting 6 for 21 over the two years. Palka, his Georgia Tech teammate Mott Hyde & Ty Ross (LSU) are the 3 Wareham starters from last year's West Division Finals team.
PLAYOFF LEADERS - Ethan Gross (Memphis) & Ty Ross (LSU) are tied for the league lead with 6 rbi apiece in the playoffs thanks, in part, to their grandslams in game 2. Gross also is tied for lead in homeruns with 2. Former Gatemen LJ Mazzilli (UCONN), whol signed late in the season with Bourne, had 6 rbi in game 1 of the the series with Cotuit and is also tied for the lead in rbi.
HOMERUN SURGE CONTINUES FOR GATEMEN - Wareham's 6 homers in game 2 give them a total of 57 when combining the regular season and playoffs. To help emphasize how big of a year it has been for homeruns for Wareham, the Gatemen hit a TOTAL of 6 homeruns as a team in the 2011 regular season - a total matched in in just one game last night.
STARTING PITCHERS FOR WEST DIVISION FINALS? - Coach Farris has not announced his starting pitcher for game 1 in the West Finals yet but with a short series with Falmouth and day off, the Gatemen will have plenty of options; including Brad Kuntz (Baylor) & Jared Ruxer (Louisville) who did not start any of the games in the opening series.
PLAYOFF SCHEDULING NOTE - By league rule, the East and West Division Finals must start on the same day so the Bourne/Cotuit game 3 today means both conference finals can start as scheduled tomorrow. However, if weather becomes a problem, stay tuned.
2012 CCBL PLAYOFFS - WESTERN DIVISION FINALS BEST-OF-3 SERIES WAREHAM VS. FALMOUTH (Wareham leads series 1-0) August 11th
STARTING PITCHERS - After a terrific 1-run outing by Kendall Graveman (Mississippi State) in game 1 of the series, Barret Astin (Arkansas) will make his CCBL Playoff debut when he gets the ball in Falmouth for game 2.
HORAN CONTINUES HOT STREAK - Tyler Horan's (Virginia Tech) 3 hits in game was the most by a Gatemen in the playoffs since John Andreoli's (UCONN) 3 hit performance in the opening game of a first round series vs Bourne in 2010.
WAREHAM-FALMOUTH PLAYOFF HISTORY - The Wareham Gatemen have faced the Falmouth Commodores only three time in the CCBL Playoffs since 1963. Wareham won the 1994 West Division Finals over Falmouth 2-0 and the Commodores returned the favor on 1996; winning a 2-0 series over the Gatemen. Last year, Wareham was swept in the West Division Finals by the Commodores.
WHAT IS ON THE LINE? - The Gatemen are looking to return to the West Division Finals for the 3rd consecutive year - losing to eventual CCBL Champ Cotuit in 2010 & falling to Falmouth in 2011. The Commodores are hoping to reach the finals for the 2nd consecutive year in hopes of their first CCBL Championship since 1980. Wareham last won the title in 2002.
GATEMEN/FALMOUTH SPLIT SEASON SERIES - The Gatemen defeated Falmouth in 4 of the 6 regular season matchups this season. The teams ended with identical records of 21-23 & the head to head matchup is what gave the Gatemen home field advantage. Since 1981, the Gatemen are now 103-68-2 in the regular season vs. Falmouth.
COMMODORES ALL-STARS - Falmouth placed two players on the West All-Star team this year - 3rd baseman Drew Dosch (Youngstown State), who had 2 hits in game 1 and starting pitcher in game 1, Trey Masek (Texas Tech)
HORAN NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Tyler Horan (Virginia Tech) was named Cape Cod Baseball League Player of the Week in week #8 of the Cape League season for his record breaking performace down the stretch.
FALMOUTH ROAD RACE - DIRECTIONS TO ARNIE ALLEN DIAMOND IN FALMOUTH - If you are planning on heading to Falmouth to support the Gatemen tonight in game 2, see our directions page in necessary. Also, plan on a little extra time if you are heading down as it is Falmouth Road Race weekend.
KEEPING OUR EYES ON THE SKIES - After a rainout on Friday night and what looks to be stormy morning on the Cape, it looks as if there will be window to the get game 2 in tonight. Check back to www.gatemen.org and follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/WarehamGatemen for updates.
KYLE SCHWARBER HITS RECORD BOOKS - Perhaps overlooked when CCBL All-Stars were selected this season, Kyle Schwarber (Indiana) has had one of the best offensive seasons in Gatemen and CCBL history. He played in all 44 regular season games and finished with a .343 batting average. His 38 rbi was good for 3rd in the league and is tied for 4th in Gatemen history. He hit the 7th most homers in the league in the "year of the homerun" in the Cape League and those 8 homers place him in 6th place all time in single season Gatemen history. His 172 bats place him 12th in Gatemen history and his 59 hits puts him 9th all time in Gatemen single season history and first in the CCBL this season. |
Gatemen Notebook JULY 29TH, 2012
|
TEAM HOMERUN RECORD BEING CHASED BY ALL-STAR DUO - Steve Newell (Gatemen 1973) & Bobby Wine (Gatemen 1982) are the all-time single season, modern day, Wareham Gatemen record holders for homeruns in a season with 11 apiece. 2012 West Team CCBL All-Star Game MVP Daniel Palka (Georgia Tech) and CCBL All-Star Tyler Horan (Virginia Tech) each have 10 homeruns so far this season and are tied atop the league leaders.
ROSTER MOVES - The Gatemen were able to make a couple recent roster moves. First, RHP Kurt McCune (LSU) has been released and has left to take care of an injury. LHP Sean Newcomb (Hartford), who was released earlier has been reactivated and made his 1st appearance this past week. The Gatemen have also added OF Ryan Sullivan from Seton Hall and LHP Dylan Stoops from the University of Richmond.
ALL-STAR THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN? - The Gatemen led the league along with Yarmouth-Dennis with 7 All-Star selections. Perhaps the 8th Gatemen could have been CF Cole Sturgeon (Louisville). Cole is 11th in the league with a .326 batting average, has started and played in all 34 games, is tied for 2nd in the league with 46 hits, is 2nd in runs with 30 and 11th in doubles with 8. He has made only 1 error and has 6 stolen bases.
OFFENSIVE YEAR ON THE CAPE - Much has been made about the normally pitching dominated Cape League having an offensive explosion this summer and the numbers prove that is the case. The Gatemen are 4th in the league in batting average at .261 and that average would have topped the league every year going back to 2008 and that year, YD hit .262 - only 1 point higher, than the current Gatemen team.
NO OFF DAYS REMAINING - Last week's rainout vs Harwich will be made up at Whitehouse Field on August 1st which means that the Gatemen will not have an off-day the rest of the season. |
Gatemen Notebook JULY 4TH, 2012
|
FINAL ROSTER IS IN PLACE - The last day to make roster changes in the CCBL was on July 1st and as a result, a number of Gatemen originally signed as non-roster invitees have been added to the roster. Here are the latest changes:
NO LONGER ON ROSTER - Sean Newcomb (Hartford), Ryan Milewski (USC-Aiken), Vladamir Camacho (Franklin Pierce), Johnny Sheridan (Brown)
ADDITIONS TO FINAL ROSTER (Were non-roster invitees) - Logan Uxa (Arkansas State), Jonathan Holder (Mississippi State), Andrew Bishop (Jacksonville State), Dan Tobik (UT-Martin), Claude Johnson (Arkansas State), Kendall Graveman (Mississippi State)
Check out our roster page to see the complete final roster.
FINAL PLAYERS ARRIVE FROM CWS - Fresh off his CWS performance where he pitched two consecutive complete games, Konner Wade (Arizona) has arrived back in Wareham. He pitched a lot of innings this season so look for Wade to add even more depth to the Gatemen bullpen. Barrett Astin & Colby Sugges have also arrived from Arkansas. Astin will join the starting rotation and is schedule to face YD at home on Thursdays. Suggs will join the Gatemen bullpen and was put right work; picking up the save in win over Bourne last night.
TWO GATEMEN SELECTED FOR COLLEGE HR DERBY - Daniel Palka (Georgia Tech) and Tyler Horan (Virginia Tech) were two of the only eight college baseball players to participate in the College Homerun Derby in Omaha, NE. Palka didn't advance past the first round but Tyler Horan was among 3 to make the final round where he lost to eventual winner Aaron Judge (Fresno State), who plays for the Brewster Whitecaps.
GATEMEN BULLPEN STELLAR - The Gatemen coaching staff doesn't mind handing the ball over to their bullpen. With big, strong arms such as Joe Filomeno (Louisville), Colby Suggs (Arkansas), Jonathan Holder (Mississippi) and Nicholas Rumbelow (LSU), Wareham is positioned well at the end of games. With former starter Clay Chapman (Florida Southern) and the additional CWS hero and Gatemen 2011 saves leader Konner Wade added to the mix, the Gatemen have maybe the most talented bullpen in the CCBL. Rumbelow leads the team in strikeouts despite pitching only 10.1 innings...all out of the pen. Four different Gatemen have saves and 4 relief pitchers have ERA's under 2.00.
OFFENSE CONTINUES TO SOAR - There has certainly been a lot of talk about the power numbers and the all around offensive explosion on the Cape League this summer. Normally a "pitcher's league", the CCBL has showcased a lot of offensive talent this summer. Harwich has hit an incredible 32 homeruns already this season which is almost double the total compared to any other team. The Gatemen are keeping pace, however, and have hit 16 homeruns, which is tied for 3rd. The team is hitting a collective .271 and has scored 93 runs - also good for 3rd in the CCBL.
HOOSIER/GATEMEN CONNECTION - Recent Gatemen teams have featured a number of talented Indiana Hoosier players and this year is no exception. Just this past week, former Gatemen All-Star Catcher Josh Phegley was named to the Triple AAA All-Star team. Not to be overlooked, current Gatemen OF/C Kyle Schwarber is among the top offensive players on the Cape. His .365 average places him 3rd in the league as does his 14 rbi.
GATEMEN JUMP INTO TOP 30 - Even before last night's late innings win vs Bourne, the surging Gatemen have jumped into Perfect Game's Top 30 Summer Collegiate Teams ranked at #26. The Harwich Mainers are ranked #1 in the country followed by Orleans #2. 6 of the 10 CCBL teams are ranked. See full rankings |

DON'T BLINK OR YOU WILL MISS THE ROSTER UPDATES - This early season has brought on a number of roster changes. Here is the latest:
NO LONGER ON ROSTER - Brett Thomas (Oregon), Brando Tessar (Oregon), Bobby Brosnahan (Michigan), Dillon Newman (Baylor)
ADDITIONS TO ROSTER - No changes since last update.
ADDITIONS AS NON-ROSTER INVITEES - Vladamir Camacho (Franklin Pierce), Jonathan Holder (Mississippi State), Dan Tobik (UT-Martin), Ryan Milewski (USC-Aiken)
GATEMEN OFFENSE OFF TO HOT START - The Cape Cod Baseball League is known as a "pitcher's league" but you wouldn't know that by facing the Gatemen offense this season. Through 8 games, Wareham leads the league with 53 runs and 47 total rbi. They are second in hits with 75 total bases with 114.
HARWICH'S PHIL ERVIN EARLY SEASON TRIPLE CROWN THREAT - As Gatemen fans can attest based on his game tying grand-slam in Harwich last week, Harwich's Phil Ervin (Samford) is an offensive force and leads the CCBL in homers and rbi. He is second in batting average. He should be fun to watch this year - when not facing your team of course!
WAREHAM OFFENSIVE LEADERS - As you would expect from the team leading the league in runs, the Wareham Gatemen have a number of players amoung the top of many offensive categories through 8 games. Kyle Schwarber (Indiana) and Daniel Palka (Georgia Tech) are tied for 3rd in the league with 8 rbi apiece. Cole Sturgeon's (Louisville) .343 batting average leads the team and places him in the top 15 in the league. Schwarber leads the CCBL with 5 doubles while he is tied for 2nd alongside teammate Tyler Horan (Virginia Tech) in runs with 9. Horan and Sturgeon are tied for 3rd in homeruns with a pair each.
COLLEGE WORLD SERIES UPDATE - South Carolina returns to the championship round to face Arizona and will try to win their 3rd straight NCAA Title. The Gamecocks eliminated Arkansas to advance. Barrett Astin & Colby Suggs from Arkansas should now be able to make their way to Wareham. For Arizona, Gatemen fans will be rooting for returning 2011 CCBL All-Star pitcher Konner Wade - who figures to get a start vs South Carolina in the finals and former Gatemen Johnny Field and Robert Refsnyder.
JOHNNY FIELD TO PLAY FOR TEAM USA - 2011 Gatemen Co-Positional Player of the Year Johnny Field (Arizona) who was expected to play again in Wareham this season, has accepted an invitation by USA Baseball to play on the Collegiate National Team this summer.
CAPE COD BASEBALL LEAGUE "POWER RANKINGS" - Our friends over at www.rightfieldfog.com have begun a weekly CCBL Power Ranking. The Gatemen enter the rankings at #7 after dropping below .500 this week and it is no surprise that the Harwich Mariners debut at #1. Check out their site which is dedicated to the Cape Cod Baseball League and is updated almost daily during the season.
SPEAKING OF RANKINGS - Perfect Game USA ranks their top 30 Summer Collegiate Teams from across the nation and updates the list throughout the season. The Gatemen entered the list at #12 and was one of 6 CCBL teams amoung the top 30. Of interest, Harwich is the #1 team and Wareham's preseason opponent, the Newport Gulls from the NECBL debuts at #2. See rankings. |

John has hit safely in all but 2 of his 10 games and he also has 4 stolen bases. His batting average has raised to .457 but his total at bats do not yet qualify to be considered among the league leaders.
WESTERN DIVISION RACE - The CCBL Western Division has been a tight race; especially for 2nd place over the past week. Entering Friday night's games, there was a 3-way tie for 2nd place in the 5 team division between Wareham, Bourne and Falmouth. All three teams lost on Friday but Gatemen and Falmouth wins on Saturday separated them from Bourne by only 2 points and both teams trail Hyannis by 6 points entering the July 4th set of games.

HOW 2011 GATEMEN COMPARE AFTER 1ST 10 GAMES - After 10 games, the Gatemen stand at 5-5 and are in 2nd place in the Western Division behind 1st place Hyannis. In 2008 at this time, the Gatemen were 2-8, in 2009 they started 5-4-1 and last season Wareham was 3-7 after 10 games.

ROSTER INCLUDES A NUMBER OF NEW FACES - As the Gatemen roster players continue to arrive from the NCAA regionals and super-regionals, a number of non-roster invitees are getting significant playing time. He is at or near the top of the league in batting avg, homeruns and rbi.

THANK YOU FOR HANGING IN THERE BROADCAST VIEWERS - As many of you know, we have partnered with Wareham Community Television this year and they are showing our games live on local cable access. We are taking their video feed and integrating that into our live webstream that we are showing on UStreamTV.com. There have been some bumps in the road as we have worked through a much more sophisticated broadcast setup. However, we believe that we are through some of our issues and it has been worth the effort. We discovered a connection issue with our high-speed internet that has now been resolved and improved some connectivity issues with WCTV. As a result, we have a 4 camera setup that is among the best in the league. Thanks to our braodcasters Chris Aliano and Eric Silverman for working through those issues and standing behind the concept. Our broadcast Friday night of the Ranaudo/Barnes pitching matchup was viewed by hundreds of viewers from across the country. |
