WAREHAM, MA: Max Muncy (Baylor) crushed a 3 run walk off home run over the wall in left field to lead the Wareham Gatemen (11-13) to a 6-5 win over Chatham (6-16-1) at Spillane Field Thursday night.
Before Muncy’s heroics, the Gatemen seemed destined for their 5th straight loss. Chatham built a 5-2 lead on the back of former Gatemen Keith Biladeau’s (Maine) pitching (6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER) and home runs from Richie Shaffer (Clemson) and JT Watkins (West Point).
The Gatemen started the comeback in the bottom of the 7th, and in a preview of what was to come in the 9th, it was Muncy taking charge. After extending his 11 game hit streak with a single in the first, he picked up his second hit of the night to lead off the inning. Then, as he advanced to second on a wild pitch, the throw from the catcher Watkins sailed into center field, allowing Muncy to come all the way around and make the score 5-3.
Joe Flynn (Franklin Pierce) pitched a scoreless 8th, then Andy Flett (Louisville) held the Anglers off the board in the top of the 9th, to hold the score at 5-3.
Chatham brought its closer Zack Jones (San Jose State) in for the bottom of the 9th, but John Andreoli (UConn) greeted him rudely with a sharp single to right field to start the inning. Rob Refsynder (Arizona) followed with a full count walk, which brought Muncy to the plate.
The slugging first baseman worked the count full before rocketing a line drive over the left field fence, to send the Gatemen storming over the railing in front of the home dug out, and to a mob scene at home plate.
Wareham looks for its second straight win Sunday night at 7 PM at Orleans.
