Jones and Whitecaps Top Gatemen

BOX SCORE

BREWSTER, MA:   Ryan Jones (Michigan State) was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI to lead the Brewster Whitecaps to a 3-2 win over the Wareham Gatemen on Sunday evening.  The Gatemen were looking to move back to .500 on the season but fell one run short and now stand at 6-8.

After a scoreless first inning, Gatemen starter and CCBL Week 1 Pitcher of the Week Luke Farrell (Northwestern) ran into some trouble in the 2nd.  Taylor Davis (Morehead State) led off the inning with the first of his 3 hits of the game and was followed by a Danny Hayes (Oregon State) single.

Two batters later, Brewster second baseman Ryan Jones (Michigan State) delivered an RBI single to give the Whitecaps an early lead.  He was followed immediately by a Mike Martinez (Florida International) RBI single and the Whitecaps took a 2-0 lead and with only 1 out and runners on the corners; threatened to blow this game wide open in only the 2nd inning.  Farrell, however, after a walk to load the bases did a terrific job settling down by getting a strike out and inducing an inning ending fly ball to centerfield.

The Gatemen threatened to match the Brewster 2nd inning in the 3rd but left 2 runners on base as they had in the previous inning.  After a scoreless 4th inning, the Gatemen put two runners on base after John Andreoli (UCONN) drew a lead off walk and Johnny Field (Arizona) reached on an error two batters later.  Field’s University of Arizona teammate Robert Refsnyder then delivered an RBI single and cut the Brewster lead to 2-1.  That run was only the 2nd Gatemen run in the previous 31 innings.

Dillon Newman (Baylor) replaced Farrell to start the top of the 5th inning and appeared to be cruising through the inning.  However, a walk to Hayes followed by another Whitecaps’s single set the stage again for Ryan Jones who delivered his 2nd RBI; this time a ground rule double that just missed being hit over the fence at Stony Brook Field.

Wareham fought back in the 6th against relief pitcher Austin Voth (Washington) who replaced Brewster starting pitcher Jordan John (Oklahoma).  Walks to Daniel Palka (Georiga Tech) and Tyler Ross (LSU) were followed by a surprise John Andreoli bunt single to load the bases for the Gatemen with two outs.  However, Wareham’s leading hitter Brandon Thomas (Georgia Tech) struck out to end the inning leaving the 7th, 8th and 9th runners left on base to close an inning in this game.

In the 7th, the Gatemen would finally deliver against another Whitcape reliever –  Brandon Love (Mercer).  Robert Refysnyder came through with his CCBL leading 3rd triple of the year.  Two pitches later, Max Muncy’s (Baylor) “swinging bunt” allowed Refnsyder to score Wareham’s 2nd run and make it a 1 run game.  Unfortunately, the Gatemen would not score any additional runs.  After a leadoff single in the 9th by Andreoli,  JT Chargois (Rice) shutdown the final 3 Wareham hitters and picked up the save.

Despite multi-hit games by Brandon Thomas, John Andreoli, William Carmona (Stony Brook) and Robert Refsnyder, the Gatemen left 10 runners on base.  There is now a 3 way tie for second place in the CCBL Western Division between Wareham, Bourne and a hot Falmouth Commodores team that started the season 0-7 and is now 6-8 after defeated first place Hyannis tonight.  The Gatemen and Commodores will face off for the first time this season on Tuesday night in Falmouth after an off day for Wareham tomorrow.
